The following were accepted as new voting members: Barry Siddall,
Stacy Tharp, Bill Adams, Chris & Tracy Fronk, Erika Figolah,
Mark Hill.
Elections were held for the Board of Trustees and Secretary. The
nominee for Secretary was Penny Nelson. Since there were no other
nominations for this office, Penny Nelson assumed the position of
Secretary. The nominees for Board of Trustees were Mark Hill,
George Johnson, David Lee, and George Mueller. The following were
elected: Mark Hill, George Johnson, and David Lee. It was brought
to the attention of the assembly that Bill Trowbridge's term
ended this year. A special Voters' Meeting will need to be held
to elect a new president.
The Treasurer, Jeffrey Scherer, had no report at this time due to
the books being updated and entered into a new computer program.
He introduced the new Bookkeeper, Stacy Tharp. They hope to have
figures available by the end of the year.
There was no Old Business. Pastor Koch reported on his
observations about St. John's congregation-its history, strengths
and resources available; things he has done and/or encouraged
during his Interim Ministry here; the results of the
Congregational Workshop; assessments and projections for our
church. He also mentioned he will be discussing with the elders
our policy for people using the church for weddings. He brought
up the issue of women's suffrage in the church and suggested
having a pastoral discretionary fund.
The Principal, David Wippich, had a printed report for the
assembly to read. He highlighted several of the items which
included inreach and outreach activities of the school children
and current enrollment figures. Our Visitation Pastor, Jim
Beversdorf, also had a written report on his pastoral activities
and the possibility of having lay people assisting with private
communions.
Mr. Ronald Scherer gave the report from the Church Council. It
included a motion to turn the oversight of bequests and the
church budget to the Board of Trustees. After discussion, it was
noted this would be a constitutional change and therefore needs
to be announced first and then voted on at the next Voters'
Meeting. The motion was tabled.
A motion was made to approve the 2002 Budget. After discussion,
the motion passed. Pastor Koch stated the issue of women's
suffrage has surfaced numerous times since he has been at St.
John's. A motion was made to form a committee to study this issue.
The motion passed. Anyone interested in serving on the committee
is to contact the President, Bill Trowbridge. A motion was made
to add a $5,000 line item to the 2002 Budget for pastoral
discretionary use. The motion was amended to have the Church
Council oversee this fund. The motion passed as amended.
Debra Trowbridge announced that Lutheran Hour Ministries will
conduct a "Living for Tomorrow" television/radio
campaign in the South Bend area in which people will be invited
to call into a phone bank. This will begin Apr. 8 and last for
two weeks. If St. John's wishes to participate there is a $200
fee to be paid.
There was no further business. The meeting adjourned and closed
with prayer led by Pastor Beversdorf.
ISLAMIC PRESENTATION
On Saturday, Dec. 8, at 5:00 p.m. in the school
Cafeteria, Pastor Koch will make a presentation on the faith of
Islam that addresses questions such as:
- What are the basics teachings of the faith called Islam.
- What is it like to live as a Christian in an Islamic country?
- What is it like to live as a woman in an Islamic Country?
- With whom does sexual sin initiate in Islamic belief and
custom?
- What does Islam say about Jesus, and what does it deny about
him?
- If you were asked, what would you say is the biggest difference
between Islam and Christianity?
- Can there be such a thing as a secular society in Islamic
countries?
- Does freedom of religion exist in Islamic countries?
- How many Islamic countries have representative forms of
government?
For the answer to these, and your own questions about Islam, join
us on Dec. 8.. Following the presentation a Soup and Sandwich
Supper will be served at 6:00 p.m. with samples of popular
Islamic food. Pastor Koch spent two months working in Ryad, Saudi
Arabia and will speak in the costume of that country. Samples of
appropriate women's wear will also be shown. Typical greetings
and customs of that land will be demonstrated and explained.
Those who wish may remain for the Saturday evening worship in the

to make these certificates available to those parents who do not
go to our church and to those who do not have opportunity to
purchase from the ladies selling during church time. All profits
from the school Kroger Certificates will be put in the school
Technology Fund to pay for our monthly $90 internet fee and to
keep our technology vision funded. Part of the vision is to place
a new computer on each teacher's desk. We appreciate your support
in this certificate effort!
Devotion of the Month
In response to the question from last month: What two things
happened after Jesus endured the testing? 1. The devil left him
alone. 2. The angels came to Him and ministered to Him. Now we
get back into Matthew 4. Think about this: When you are in a
situation where teams are chosen, does it seem like the most
popular people are chosen first? Answer: Most likely, depending
on the type of team being generated. It is good to know, however,
that Jesus does not choose His team that way. Read Matthew 4:18-22.
Jesus began choosing His team of disciples. They weren't the most
educated, the most intelligent, the most athletic, or the most of
anything in particular. Jesus knew the good, the bad, the
everything about the men He was choosing. He accepted them as
they were and would help them become all they needed to be! Read
Mark 3:14. The second half of the verse tells us what Jesus
planned for His team to do. What does it say? Do you take time to
"be with" Jesus? Find a quiet place and time where you
can be alone for a few minutes. When I was younger I would take
my dog and sit by the banks of the creek or on the leeward side
of a snow drift in winter to be alone. Lots of thoughts unique to
me came and went in the matter of a few moments. Try to find such
a place for a few days in succession. Talk to Jesus about
troubles, expectations, promises, and anticipate a return on your
time. Jesus is...and will be the answer!!
DUNELAND LUTHERAN HIGH SCHOOL NEWS
The benefit concert held Nov. 4 for the high
school was a success! Thank you to all who helped with this
effort. We hope to make this an annual event.
Our boys' basketball team has games scheduled in December,
January, and February. A schedule may be obtained by calling the
school (219-874-5103). Coach McGregor is planning a commemorative
memory book for this first team. A donation of $10 will make you
a patron. Patron's names will be listed in the book.
Duneland Luth. High School will have an Open House on Sunday, Jan.
20, 2002 at Immanuel Luth. Church in Michigan City from 2-4:00 p.m.
This is for students entering high school for the 2002-03 school
year.
During this time of thanksgiving and preparation for Christmas,
we give thanks for all of your support in the past year.
Scholarship funds have been started. They are the Bruce Danfelser
Scholarship Fund in honor of Mr. Danfelser our first principal,
the Pastor David Albertin Scholarship Fund, and the Robert John
Diedrich Memorial Scholarship Fund. Donations may be made to any
of these three funds. Another way to support Duneland is to
sponsor a student on a monthly basis. This monthly donation will
be applied to the student's tuition.
WHAT'S NEW AT SUNDAY SCHOOL
What does Christmas mean to you? It seems
thoughts range from the celebration of Jesus' birth (we know that
Jesus was not actually born on Dec. 25, but probably in the
summer season), a time for gifts and parties, holiday
decorations, and a FRANTIC schedule that can leave us exhausted.
Think back to the time Jesus was born...things were much slower
back then. Life was much simpler! The only fanfare came from
multitudes of angels who made quite an impression on some lowly
shepherds. Do all of our well-planned festivities really add to
the meaning of Christmas? This year before you get over committed
to too many activities, try sitting down with your family and
discuss just which ones carry the most meaning biblically, and
stick to those! The popular phrase, "Jesus Is The Reason For
The Season" is good advice and so true!
Our "Skate for Sawmya" party was a lot of fun. We were
pleased to have friends from the Day School join us for an
evening of spills and thrills! The benefit for our Compassion
International Child, "Sawmya," raised approximately $35.
Thanks for supporting this worthwhile mission!
This year's Halloween alternative, "Mystery Mansion,"
was a big success. It provided a safe, fun, and Bible-based time
for children age 2-12 during trick or treat hours. Many thanks to
Mark and Christel Bublitz, Michael and Jeri Lemke, Dennis Proud,
and Paul and Cheri Schuelke for all of their hard work on this
project. God bless you!
Children with perfect attendance for October: Caleb Bublitz,
Austin Gropp. Aleczander Smith, Abigail Vaughn, Savannah Vaughn,
Brooke Baima, Samuel Feldt, Storm Shortt, Sara Tharp, Ryan
Farrell, Susan Feldt, Lindsey Hull, Alexander Kelsey, Taylor
Baima, T.J. Coffeen, Chelsea Levandoski, Zachery Robbins, Aaron
Vaughn, Sam Bublitz, Justin Farrell, Victoria Kelsey, Adam Tharp,
Sky Shortt, Tom Feldt, Scott Vaughn, Larry Keller, and Andrew
Vaughn. Congratulations to all of these students for making
Sunday School a priority.
Our Staff Spotlight this month is on two of our
new teachers, husband and wife team Rick and Shireen Shortt....
Rick and Shireen have two children, Sky age 7 and Storm age 5.
Shireen's hobbies include collecting Precious Moments and Disney
items. Her favorite food is cheese pizza. A special Bible verse
to both of the Shortts is John 3:16, "For God so loved the
world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever
believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
The Shortts began helping with Sunday School this past summer.
The thing Shireen likes best about helping with Sunday School is
the wonderful children and teaching her son, Storm, this year.
Ricky's hobbies include Disney, art, and home remodeling. His
favorite places to eat are Country Buffet and Bobaks and he likes
desserts! Ricky's favorite part of teaching Sunday School is
seeing the children's smiling faces! We welcome both to our staff
and thank them for making Sunday School a part of their lives!
May God richly bless both of you!
Now is a good time to invite all 2 yr. olds and parents to our
class held for them in the Lil' Saints Sanctuary of the church
basement. The teacher is Mrs. Stephanie Kessler. For more
information, contact our Superintendent, Mrs. Melody Povlock (325-3049).

Project 2000 (& Beyond!)
The Board of Trustees is currently meeting with
an architect to begin new plans for Project 2000. This project
involves adding an elevator & upstairs handicap accessible
restroom to the church, rewiring the church, putting in a new air/heating
system, moving the Welcome Center & other repairs. We will re-evaluate
our main church entrance to determine if a change might be
incorporated into this project. We would like to have this
project underway before we call a new Pastor, to show we are
forward looking, growing church. We will let you know in future
Newsletters how you can help the exciting challenge of improving
our ministry services. If you have any questions or input,
contact chairman, Paul Shelby, or any Trustee.
BOARD OF PUBLIC RELATIONS
General Advertising/Marketing
The Board of Public Relations began a steady
campaign of advertising and marketing for the Church & School
following the September 11th attack. They have been using the
Message of Love ads from last year's advertising campaign, as
well as ads inviting the public to attend various activities and
worship services.
We also participated in a "History of LaPorte County"
section with a half page ad that discussed our history, our
present, & our future goals. (St. John's School also helped
pay for that ad.) Our goal has been to keep St. John's name out
in front of the community as a caring family of believers who
would welcome them in. We believe that the Lord allowed a window
of opportunity to open for us when more people began reaching for
the Lord after that day. We want to be there to reach back!
