From the Pastor & Staff—

Worship Practices and Decisions

We have received some questions regarding how decisions are made regarding worship at St. John’s. Here is a brief summary: (For more information, contact your Elder, the Worship Committee or Pastor Koch.)

How is worship designed at St. John?

The worship services of St. John are designed at meetings of the Worship Committee. This includes an elder, the pastor, all Music Directors,Usher and Altar Guild representatives, the organist, and any others that may be invited or may request to participate.

How are decisions made?

The committee examines the customary way of doing worship and, in general, follows the practices and customs of the past for St. John’s and of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, as laid out in our worship books. For example, the reading or singing of the Introit has been associated with different forms of the Sunday liturgy (i.e. Lutheran Worship, Hymnal Supplement, etc.). We generally follow the past practice on this, in so far as we are aware of it. When new things are added, such as the Passover Meal, Elders & Worship Committee are consulted.

Are changes necessary?

This depends on the situation and the nature of the change. For example, having a children’s sermon at each service has encouraged younger families to come with their children. There has been a marked increase in their attendance at worship. Natural Church Development, a program that aids congregations in becoming more healthy and thus in growing, states that the worship must be inspiring and encouraging. Any change in that direction would benefit all congregations.

Will everything change?

No, only those things which you & your leader representatives decide will benefit the church and its witness to the gospel in this community. During an Interim Pastorate we provide samples of things you could do. Long term changes are up to you as you examine what you have done, what you might do, and what works.

Our best math students in grades 5-8 will be competing in a contest with other Lutheran Schools from the region. This event was scheduled to be held at Immanuel Lutheran in Valpo, but it was snowed out. We will now administer the tests in-house and ship to Valpo for competition scoring.

It was announced by the school board that Mrs. Marlene Will has had second thoughts about retiring and will be teaching in grade 1 for the 2002-03 school year. So, all retirement recognitions are being put on hold till further notice.

MONTHLY DEVOTION:

Read Numbers 9:1-10:36

Why did God require unleavened bread for celebrating the Passover?

The Passover was a memorial of god’s intervention in bringing His people out of bondage in Egypt (9:4-5,11). At the first Passover, bread was taken fresh from kneading, before it had time to rise, because they had to leave quickly when Pharaoh finally relented and told them to leave. Yeast is also symbolic of sin as it grows and spreads throughout a person or community. Thus, unleavened bread not only reminded the people of God’s deliverance from slavery in Egypt, but it also symbolized God’s will that His people remain distinct and unpolluted, set apart by Him from the world around them.

From the Sunday School Superintendent…

WHAT’S NEW AT SUNDAY SCHOOL…

What's brings a smile to your face this spring? Is it that winter is over, and nicer weather approaches? Is it vacation plans? Maybe it's a chance to get outside and do some gardening! Well, one thing that should bring a HUGE smile is the fact that Jesus Christ is no longer in that grave! Throughout history, various religions have worshipped their "gods"...Buddha, Mohammed, etc. and their followers make pilgrimages to visit their places of entombment. Followers of Jesus may visit the garden tomb as well. What's the difference? Our Savior is NOT in the tomb, praise God! His stay in the grave was a short one! We don't serve a dead mortal, we serve a living Lord! Alleluia!

In March we took a field trip to the La Porte County Home to deliver all the items we collected during "Have a Heart" month. We also sang "Oh How I Love Jesus" and "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands". Thanks to all the parents and staff who drove and chaperoned on this trip. Many personal care items like toothpaste, socks, deodorant, shampoo, etc. were donated by the children and their families. Also given to the residents were the following items: The entire New Testament on audiotape, 3 large print Bibles, various Christian video tapes (i.e. The Robe, The Greatest Story Ever Told etc.) a cassette tape of "The Cathedrals", and a book on prayer. These items were purchased from our February door offerings. Thanks to everyone who gave from the heart!

We would like to say a special thanks to AAL and Imogene Dahl for the invitation to join the school and pre-school for the Krispy Kreme Doughnut sale. What fun we had selling (and eating) all those yummy doughnuts! Thanks also to Annette Williams who did so much work promoting the sale and organizing the ticket packets and fliers. Finally, thanks to all of you who bought those doughnuts! Our prayer now is that the Lord would give us discernment in the use of these funds, so that we will be good stewards of what has been given to us!

During March we set about being fishermen for the Lord. We were so happy to have caught a number of visitors! The visitor and the one who "caught" them got to fish for candy from our fish bowl. We hope our visitors get "hooked" on Sunday School and will come back often!

Those with perfect attendance during the month of February were as follows: Brandon Gropp, Amelia Kessler, Austin Gropp, Aleczander Smith, Brooke Baima, Allison Coffeen, Samuel Feldt, Storm Shortt, Susan Feldt, Alexander Kelsey, Morgan Livinghouse, Taylor Baima, Emily Barnhart, T.J. Coffeen, Chelsea Levandoski, Brittney Ryan, Sam Bublitz, Victoria Kelsey, Paul Lloyd, Shane Rogers, Andrew Schuelke, Sky Shortt, Jacob Barnhart, Kayla Calkins, Tom Feldt, and Kathryn Scherer. Congratulations for setting a good example for all of us! These children received a WWJD bracelet.

We are looking forward to singing in church on April 14 in the 8:00 a.m. service. PARENTS: Please make every effort to bring your child to join in song with us. It's so wonderful to worship the Lord in song! Mr. Martin Vollrath is heading this activity and we thank him.

It's not too soon to be thinking about our Summer Program. This year we're going on a faith building expedition called FAITH MOUNTAIN. We'll be learning all about the faith of Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, David, Moses and many others! Jesus admonished his disciples to have faith like a little child. We want to help children discover all the many people of faith in God's Word. God's Word says that without faith it's impossible to please God!

(Hebrews 11:6) Let's climb "Faith Mountain" together this summer!

From Our Boards & Committees…

All St. John’s Boards, Committees and Organizations must be under the oversight of Church Council directly, or one of the Boards under Church Council. This is not to restrict their activity, but to give them a place to go for support and assistance when needed. This also provides a proper check & balance of the church to see that all groups are abiding by the Constitution and By-Laws, and gives them a proper channel in which to take motions to the Voter’s Assembly when needed.

Boards should check in regularly with the organizations they have under their oversight to see how they may offer assistance and support of their ministry work. They should also look for ways they can encourage the start of new ministries. All Boards, Committees and Organizations should report to the members of St. John’s on a regular basis regarding their activities through the Monthly Newsletters and the Weekly Time-Talents-Treasures News Update.

CHURCH COUNCIL

CALL COMMITTEE

The Call Committee has been formed and will hold its first meeting on April 11 at 7 p.m. Pastor Fitchett, our Circuit Counselor, will be present. Congregational President, Chuck Link, Jr., will preside and will lead the committee to organize itself and its work.

For the sake of our members, we provide the following information about your submissions of candidates for the call as Head Pastor. First, when you submit a name it helps the committee if you provide the information requested on the form. Secondly, please understand that the committee must follow Synodical procedures in handling applications for these nominees.

(con’t)

-5-

All nominees must be submitted to the District President to assure that they are available for a call by our church.

The District President will return the nominees that are available and will solicit from them, or their District President, a synod approved form that provides additional information on the nominee.

These two steps may take a little time to complete because of the contacts that need to be made and the mailing and assembly of materials by the District office.

When the Call Committee receives back all of the approved candidates names and information files it must then decide which of them is to be given final consideration. These may then be interviewed by phone, and some may be interviewed here in La Porte.

The Call Committee will then move through the channels provided by our constitution to bring a final “short list” before the Voters Assembly for its consideration. They may either select one of these for call or send the list back and ask for another, or an additional list.

This article is intended to give “general” information about the calling process to inform members about the steps in the process.

ELDERS

DEAF MINISTRY

St. John’s offers worship and Bible study for Deaf members of our congregation and the surrounding communities. On the 2nd Saturday of each month we have a CITI (Church Interpreter Training Institute at Ft. Wayne Seminary) certified Interpreter for the Deaf signing at the 7 p.m. worship service. On the 4th Saturday of each month at 6 p.m. we have a Bible Study for the Deaf in the School Ladies Lounge. Both hearing and Deaf members are invited to attend this study by Indiana Missionary for the Deaf, Rev. Jerry Munz. We are currently studying the book of Genesis. Persons interested in working with the Deaf Ministry are also invited. For more information, contact Congregation Coordinator, Debra Trowbridge, at (219) 362-3726 or e-mail stjohnsarc@csinet.net

ALTAR GUILD

The Altar Guild is looking for new members. We hope you will consider joining us. Before you say no, let me tell you what is involved in being a member. We meet 4 times a year and our dues are $3.00 per year. We do have one extra cleaning day each year and also a potluck.

Our duties include sweeping and dusting each weekend for one month out of the year, the Altar area in the Church and Chapel and the Pastor’s office. We also do the following:

1 - Change the paraments (colored cloths that adorn the pulpit, lecturn, etc.) when necessary.

2 - Change the altar cloth when necessary

3 - Help with communion (we do the clean up)

4 - Help the acolytes with their robes and light the wands

5 - After 2nd service , we take the flowers to shut-ins or whomever the Pastor has designated for that weekend (when the sponsor of the flowers does not want to keep them)

6 - We also take home the dust cloths, towels, purifiers, etc., wash, dry and iron and return as soon as possible each week during our designated month.

How do we know when these things need to be changed? They are all listed on a calendar in the Working Sacristy for us to follow. Also, there is a blue folder listing the duties for us and the Pastor puts a list in the drawer of the people who are to receive the flowers weekly.

Ideally we like to have four ladies each month so the duties won’t be burdensome and also to allow for flexibility in our personal schedules. We do need to have each service covered. You will be assigned with some ladies that have been involved for a long time. So don’t be concerned about not knowing what to do.

It is really an honor to be involved with the upkeep and beautifying of the Chancel area of our Church. We hope to hear from you soon. People to contact about joining or if you have any questions: President - Judy Schreiber - 362-6390; Secretary - Kathy Page - 362-5903; Treasurer - Mary Jo Uebele - 362-2538; Flower Fund - Sherrill Lee - 654-7313. Thank you for your consideration!

PUBLIC RELATIONS

LUTHERAN HOUR MINISTRIES

Do you crave more balance in your life? A feeling of lasting satisfaction. The ability to adjust to new situations. A willingness to take risks for growth. Not perfection, but doing your best to meet your own and other’s needs. Author Melanie Wilson wanted the same thing for her own life, but it didn’t come easily. Find out how she learned to balance the challenges of her life and discover principles that will help you in your own search for balance. You can find this booklet and many more at the Project Connect booklet racks found in the Church Narthex and in the School hallway near the Congregation Coordinator’s Office.

Donations toward this project may be placed in the collection plate labeled “St. John’s Lutheran Hour Ministries Fund”.

LIVING FOR TOMORROW

The Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM) program “Living for Tomorrow” takes place April 8 to 12 and 15 to 19 in the South Bend media market area (which includes us!) We are asking for your prayers, that people would be receptive to these radio and television commercials and want to receive more information that could bring them to the Lord.

Also pray for St. John’s volunteers (Ellie Heidel, Debra Trowbridge, Sherrill Lee, Tracy Fronk, Bill Trowbridge, Pastor Koch, & Pastor Beversdorf) from St. John’s, that they might have the Lord’s help as they answer phones and deliver information to those who are requesting it. If you would like to help with these deliveries to areas near our church, please see St. John’s LHM reps Debra Trowbridge or Ellie Heidel, or call the Church Office at (219)362-3726.

NEWSLETTER DISTRIBUTION

Would you be interested in picking up your Newsletter in the Narthex on Sunday or from the Church Office instead of having it mailed? With enough participation, this could save the church on mailing costs. If you are interested in doing this, please sign up on a clip board in the Church Welcome Center or at the Church Office. Please also give us your e-mail address if you are interested in receiving the Newsletter, or other periodic information by e-mail. Both of these programs will be tried this year on an experimental basis. Please let us know how they work for you!
