Mission and Ministry

of St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, La Porte, IN

Vol. 51 March 2002 No. 2

__________________________________________________________________

“As one family, we lovingly proclaim Jesus Christ.”

From the Pastor & Staff—

A big thank you to Bill Trowbridge for his leadership and dedication to the Lord in serving as President of the Congregation during a very difficult year. May the Lord continue to bless his service to the congregation in other areas. He passed the hat on to new Congregation President, Chuck Link, Jr. at the February 7th Special Voter’s meeting. We pray that Mr. Link will continue the growth of the congregation in Bible-centered ministry. We also pray for David Wippich, as he considers our Congregation’s Call to be Principal of the Day School.

As we announced in the February Newsletter, Ash Wednesday kicked off some changes in format for our Monthly Newsletter and Weekly Bulletin. You will notice that we have a new format to our St. John’s monthly newsletter. We are focusing more on the Mission & Ministry of our church, and on ways that we can improve sharing our congregation’s mission projects and ministry information with you. We are also changing the bulletin, creating one portion for Worship and one portion for news. The news portion will be a combination of the Announcements section of the bulletin and the weekly Time-Talent-Treasures insert. We will be printing out much of our Order of Worship to make it easier for members and visitors to follow the service without flipping back and forth between books quite so much. Your suggestions and comments are always welcome as we continue to improve and evolve with the needs of the times!

After the last voter’s meeting, the Board of Trustees presented the “Project 2000 and Beyond” building renovation plan that has future mission and outreach concepts in mind. The plans include a new main entrance with enlarged Welcome Center, an elevator and handicap accessibility plans, air conditioning and a Cry Room. Our architect is Roger Potratz of Michigan City. Enclosed with the newsletter you will find the architect’s drawings of how these changes will look, and a more detailed explanation of the plans from our Board of Trustees. We thank the Lord for their hard work through all the difficulties encountered these past few years. We look forward to the many ways we will be able to minister to visitors and handicapped members with these changes in the future!

Also, Pastor Koch would like to thank all of you who remembered him and his wife in prayers and cards, regarding the death of Pastor’s mother-in-law on Ash Wednesday. Your love and support are appreciated!

From the Sunday School Superintendent…

WHAT’S NEW AT SUNDAY SCHOOL…

It’s our annual LET’S GO FISHIN’ MONTH! This month, we are encouraging children to fish for a friend, and “reel ‘em in” to Sunday School! The children who bring visitors, as well as “the catch” of the day will have a chance to fish for candy fish from our fish bowl. Let’s do as Jesus instructed and be FISHERS OF MEN! With His help, we can do a great job!

We were astounded at the enthusiastic giving during our “Save Our Sawmya” Mission Project in January! We originally had a shortfall of $159 to meet our commitment to Compassion “Sawmya” from India. The children (from 2 year old/parent through 8th grade) were challenged to bring change every week. Money was assigned a point value. Each week the total points were added for each class. It was a pretty close contest, but in the end, it was our Kindergarten class that tallied the highest points! A total of $417.01 was collected (including two gifts from adult friends of the Sunday School). We just praise God for this answer to prayer. With the surplus funds we will be able to purchase gifts for Sawmya’s birthday and a gift for next Christmas, PLUS, we’ll have a good start on next year’s commitment! To all the parents who encouraged their child to share and tithe...THANK YOU!

During the month of February, we focused on our “Have a Heart for the La Porte County Home” project. Mrs. Rita Winger, director of the home, came to explain to everyone how the County Home got started, and the purpose of the residence. Door offerings were collected from the Congregation, and the children and their families were encouraged to remember the residence of the home when they did their weekly shopping. Items such as toothpaste, socks, shampoo, microwave popcorn, etc. were brought in by the students. With the money collected from the door offerings, we will purchase Bibles and Christian audio/ visual tapes for the residents. In March we will take a field trip to the La Porte County Home, deliver the collected items, and sing a few songs while we visit with the residents. A report on the amount of the door offerings collected will be noted in the bulletin, when available. Thanks to everyone who gave “from the heart”! Thought for the day: BE AN ORGAN DONOR...GIVE JESUS YOUR HEART!

Those students with perfect attendance during January were as follows:

Brandon Gropp, Caleb Bublitz, Tyler Games, Austin Gropp, Madeline Livinghouse, Mary Lloyd, Brook Baima, Samuel Feldt, Abbey Lloyd, Nickolas Owens, Storm Shortt, Susan Feldt, Lindsey Hull, Jenna Marie Kalsow, Alexander Kelsey, Morgan Livinghouse, Taylor Baima, Emily Barnhart, Katrina Games, Chelsea Levandoski, Brittney Ryan, Sam Bublitz, Justin Farrell, Victoria Kelsey, Paul Lloyd, Sky Shortt, Andrew Schuelke, Tom Feldt, Jacob Barnhart, and Larry Keller. Thirty students had perfect attendance during January! (We think this sets a January record.) Praise the Lord! These children received smiley face “Jesus Loves Me” bouncy balls!

In the classroom...our 7th-8th Grade class has begun a new study on Esther and Ruth...What interesting ladies! Come and check us out! We’re meeting in the church basement, in the room under the stairway.

Due to the Easter Sunday Service time change, Sunday School will be held from 8:45-9:45 a.m. on Easter Sunday only. Come celebrate the Lord’s resurrection with us! Alleluia! He lives!

Project 2000 and Beyond—(Update letter from the Board of Trustees)

Fellow members of St John’s :

As you may or may not know, in 1999 the Voters Assembly agreed to support Project 2000 from start to finish. The Board of Trustees had a few set backs with this project—namely the repair of the Gym roof and School roof and both pastors leaving. It is now 2002 and we are ready to move on with the Church addition & improvements. With your support we will accomplish the following as you can see by the preliminary drawings.

1. New Welcome Center.

2. 3-stop elevator

3. Handicap accessible bathrooms on the main floor.

4. Handicap accessible bathrooms in the basement.

5. Ramp to make our lower basement level handicap accessible also.

6. Air conditioning in the main floor only.

7. New electrical service in the church with its own transformer.

8. New transformer for the school.

9. Cry room for our new parents and children. (We are working on a

new location for this as requested by many of you.)

10. New car port and drive up at welcome center level.

11. Moving the men’s restroom in the basement.

12. Enlarging the bride’s room.

13. Some new tile in the Narthex.

14. New Church storage under the Welcome Center.

15. New lighting in the Church .

16. New Janitors sink.

Our current plan is to break ground on this project in late May /early June and be completed by Thanksgiving.

We ask that you pray for this project and that all boards and committees involved in this project, that this will help with our mission at St. John’s. And that we may glorify our Lord by reaching out lovingly to those with special needs to bring them into fellowship with the rest of their brothers & sisters in Christ.

Donations toward this project can be made to the Building fund.

A Devotional Reading…

Condensed Devotion from Earl P. Feddersen, writer of LCMS World Mission (Reference: 1 Cor. 1:10-17, Matt. 4:12-23, Is. 9:1-4)

Paul’s happy words, opening the First Letter to the Corinthians, were followed very quickly with unhappy words about the divisions and rivalries that had sprung up like weeds in that congregation. Paul didn’t have the luxury of being able to take a course in conflict management at a local university. He had to attack the problem in the manner that seemed best to him at the moment...This letter, written almost two centuries ago, reveals that conflict management is hardly a new phenomenon.

Specific subjects or areas of division and conflict are as varied as the people involved in them. In the case of the Corinthians, loyalty to a particular apostle or teacher became a source of pride and jealousy. People in Corinth were aligning with these leaders as though they were heading up different political parties…

Another area of division had to do with spiritual gifts. As I read the New Testament, it seems clear to me that these gifts are given to the church. The fact that a particular person receives a particular gift is merely God’s method of providing that gift to the church...As a matter of fact, we might think of the gifts as persons who are needed by a given church in order for it to accomplish its mission and ministry….

The apostle was concerned that the cross of Christ was being emptied of its meaning and he pointed the Corinthians to the Gospel of God’s grace in Christ. He urged them to follow Christ alone, as people set free from sin by the grace of God in the cross of Christ. Worldly wisdom is humbled by the foolishness of the cross and if that humiliation was the way our Leader chose to save us then we certainly cannot follow Him with displays of smug superiority.

...The call of Peter, Andrew, James and John [was] to become “Fishers of People.”...they gave up their careers, along with success, prestige, money, influence, family life and the roofs over their heads. They gave up everything in order to become students of a penniless itinerant Teacher. Today, most of His “followers” will not give up an hour a week of their precious time. The great majority will not tithe and many don’t give a dime.

Commenting on this fact, Edward A. Beckstrom of Equality, Alabama, asked, “What have YOU left to follow Jesus?”…”First, we should leave our prejudices...I’m not just talking about the prejudices between the races or between religions, but the everyday prejudices between people that arise out of jealousy, or greed, or just personality conflicts. If there’s one thing Jesus couldn’t stand, it was prejudices of any kind. How He lit into the Pharisees because of their prejudices! He compared them to marble mausoleums, pretty on the outside, but full of corpses on the inside.

…”Another thing we need to leave is our aversion to the pain of new ideas. It’s been said that the seven last words of the church might very well be: ‘WE HAVE ALWAYS DONE IT THIS WAY.’...The very fact that Jesus walked up to a group of fisherman...and said ‘FOLLOW ME,’ was an indication that things would be different from then on. The people, the religion, the world would be changed by the presence of Christ in the world. EVERYTHING that God touches changes. So if the church doesn’t change, then there’s a strong indication that God has not touched the church or its people. Remember, when Christ says ‘Follow Me,’ if we’re not MOVING—read that ‘changing’—then we’re not following”…

If a church is having financial difficulty, every good steward ought to be concerned about that. Members need to be wary of how the money is spent, but they must examine their own stewardship as well. Often, God has provided the gifts, but the members have selfishly kept them. Almost always, the people who stir up the most trouble and complain the loudest about how money is spent are the ones who don’t give any of it. They are motivated personally by greed and they push their greediness onto Christ’s corporate Body.

The primary mission of the church is to people who are not in it yet… In the Church, there are two kinds of people-...those who have already left their nets to follow Christ and those who are being invited to do the same….

We cannot follow Christ if we insist on dragging out nets along. They will snag on rocks of greed, selfishness, pride and prejudice. We will keep going back to mess with them and Christ will move on out of sight. Never compare your following to someone else. Compare what you do to what has been done for you. Compare what you give to what you have been given. Christ has given us love and service without limit. Think for a minute about the “nets” He left for us!
