“As one family, we lovingly proclaim Jesus Christ.”

From Pastor Koch:

CLOSING COMMENTS

“What’s the hardest part of Interim Ministry?” a friend once asked me. My reply was, “The last day.” That will have come and passed as you read these words. And I want to thank all of you who came to the reception held for me on June 29th.

Yet, in reality, I look forward to another congregation and another interim pastorate. Right now it could be either in Indianapolis or in Vermillion, Ohio. My wife is rooting for Vermillion.

I have asked that I be sent the monthly newsletter, and, yes, I will send in a donation to cover the cost. I will look forward to hearing about new and exciting developments in the proclamation of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus. Be assured, you and your pastor will be in our prayers.

A very special thanks and praise to those of you who have made this a special two year span in my life. Your faces, actions, and love will accompany and support me wherever I go. God bless you all.

LUTHERAN HOUR MINISTRIES GIVING RESULTS & PEORIA, ILL EVENT IN JULY

St. John's Lutheran Church raised $88 for Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM) programs at our last Mission Sunday appeal in April. Giving is down across the United States, causing LHM to make some cutbacks.

Lutheran Hour Ministries announced in May that it is eliminating 25 of 166 staff positions at its St. Louis County headquarters, closing 18 offices affecting an additional 60 of its 296 full- and part-time international staff, and discontinuing production of its “On Main Street” television and “Woman to Woman” radio programs.

“Lutheran Hour Ministries” is the name used by the Int’l Lutheran Laymen’s League (Int’l LLL), a Synod auxiliary, in its outreach efforts.

At the same time it announced the cutbacks, LHM began the rollout of a five-pronged restructuring strategy aimed at Gospel-outreach ministry appealing to a broad base of people.

The decision resulted in a number of changes, including the cancellation of new television and radio shows, although they will continue to be aired in syndication wherever possible, said Telle. He added that “The Lutheran Hour,” LHM’s flagship program, will continue radio- and Internet-based programming. Also, LHM’s animated family-oriented programs will continue to be available.

As part of the restructuring, 16 employees accepted early-retirement packages. The remaining employees were laid off beginning May 12.Worldwide, the office closings will reduce the number of countries in which LHM operates from 54 to 39.

According to Telle, the list of nations in which LHM will cease operations will be available at a later date. It is not being distributed at this time since not all offices scheduled to be closed have been notified.

Notification is expected to be completed by July 17, opening day for LHM’s three-day “2003 Outreach Expo and Convention” in Peoria, Ill.

The event is a departure from the organization’s usual, four-day annual convention which, in the past, has concentrated mostly on business meetings, delegate voting and worship services. While those events will still take place, a separate “track,” one incorporating events meant to interest families and a younger demographic segment, will simultaneously take place, said Telle. Included in that track are family seminars, nine servant events, a Christian-comedy/music concert, motivational speakers and worship.

If you are interested in attending the Peoria, Illinois event, even for just Saturday, please contact St. John's LHM Ambassador, Debra Trowbridge for more information or to car pool.

BOARD OF MISSIONS AND EVANGELISM

Ten years ago, Pregnancy Assistance Center opened its doors in a tiny rented basement space. Its mission was to help young women and girls struggling with problem pregnancies to choose life for their developing babies.

With the support of the religious community as well as the community at large the Center has grown to serve one of every six pregnant women in La Porte County.

Earlier this year the Center was facing the possibility of closing for lack of funds. But God had other plans. Because of a merger with Women’s Care Center of South Bend, there will be a expansion of facilities and services. The first step is the purchase of a permanent location on Maple Ave. The Center is seeking gifts over a three year period from individuals, families, churches and service groups. Rooms will be dedicated for leadership gifts as follows:

The Budget

Home Purchase $100,000 Education/waiting (2) $12,000

Renovation donated Baby store $9,000

Furniture (after donation) $7,000 Counselor/Reception $9,000

Lighted Signage $2,700 Counseling room (2) $7,500

Used clothing room $6,000 Kitchen $6,000

Office $4,500

All gifts of $1,000 or more will be recognized on the Tree of Life at the Center.

The new Center will be a warm comfortable place for women to talk and listen...to cry and console...to embrace life for their growing babies.

BOARD OF SOCIAL MINISTRY

A Special “THANK YOU” to each and every one of you, Church and School, who donates food to our food pantry. It is because of your caring and generosity that we, as a Church/School family, are able to help those in need in our congregation. May the Lord continue to bless this ministry.
