“As one family, we lovingly proclaim Jesus Christ.”

From Your Pastor, David M. Young

As faithful Christians, we have all come to understand that life as a disciple of Jesus Christ is not always “a bed of roses.” By this, I don’t mean that we are not blessed beyond our wildest imagination. After all, as we continue our lives as both sinner and saint, what greater blessing can we have than forgiveness of our sins and the promise of salvation as a saint of God? Still, we don’t have too far to look to see the ravages of sin and despair in the world around us. Even as I write this, you may be going through some temporal crisis, be it health or financial crisis, emotional or spiritual.

You may be left asking: WHAT CAN I DO? What can I do to help out, what can I do because I’m scared, what can I do with my anger, what can I do with my grief?

I have asked that question myself. I have tried to make sense of things by studying the Bible for God’s words of comfort and peace for these times so that I might in some way be a comfort to you. The one thing that I know that I can do for myself and for you, dear friends, is to pray. To study diligently is good, but to pray diligently is even better, and I believe that as your pastor, I can’t forget or neglect to pray. I know that I can’t accomplish anything against the power of sin in my life. And what could I accomplish against Satan’s power and deception by my own strength? I realize that I’m helpless over my own flesh which betrays me more frequently than not. So, I thank God for the strength and power that He enables me in prayer.

But what can any of us do without God’s grace and help? Without me you can do nothing (John 15:5), said our Lord Jesus Christ, and the apostle Paul said We are not sufficient of ourselves to think (much less accomplish) anything (that is, anything godly and good); but our sufficiency is of God(2nd Corinthians 3:5).

The uncertainty of our future, the search and desire to make sense of the suffering in our worlds always leads us to a new sense of spirituality in our lives, and a renewed sense for the necessity of daily prayer. We must seek our capability to cope with our concerns humbly in sincere prayer to God for his help. The holy apostles in Acts 6:4 said We will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.” You see, these disciples in the Scriptures put prayer first because they new that they couldn’t do anything in their lives, especially the ministry of preaching the Word, without first praying fervently for God’s grace and help.

The same is true today. There is nothing that you can do to save yourself, not just from eternal damnation, but to lift your feet out of the miry clay of trouble that cements us in this world. Nothing that you can accomplish that is good in your lives, nothing that you can do as servants of Jesus Christ (that includes being good spouses, good parents and grand parents and good friends and neighbors) can ever be accomplished without first praying and seeking God’s will for your day. God has given us prayer as a key; a key to heaven, a key to understanding the Scriptures, and the key to our hearts. Often the answers that we try to find with great effort and much brain racking and emotion but still are unsuccessful and unproductive are given to us unexpectedly after a few breaths of sincere prayer.

Here’s how you can turn this “key.” Speak to God in simple words, as you would talk to an intimate friend and tell Him about your sins, your worries, and your weakness. Acknowledge your unworthiness and God’s grace. Ask for forgiveness. If there are special sins that trouble you, ask special forgiveness for them.

But also tell Him about your joys. Thank God for all the good things in your life. Remember that if Jesus had not died for you, you wouldn’t even have the right to pray to Him.

Pray for others, for your children, parents, brothers, sisters, relatives, friends, teachers, for your pastor (who especially covets your prayers for him and his ministry to you) for this troubled world, for protection for our nation, for unbelievers who reject Jesus as their Savior, even for your enemies, and for all who need God’ help and guidance in any way.

But most of all, believe in your heart that God will hear your prayer. He will do it every time as you pray in faith in Jesus’ name, for that is God’s promise to you.

Brothers and sisters in Christ, I promise that I will never cease praying for you! I hope you will never cease praying for yourselves, your families, and the ministries of St. John’s! SOLA DEI GLORIA!

Your brother in Christ’s service,

Pastor Young.

Other notes:

The  National Lutheran Schools Association recently reviewed the Phase II Self-Study that we completed last April. St. John’s Lutheran School was presented with an award by Dr. David Ebeling, the District Executive Counselor to Education, on Sunday, September 7, 2003, at the Outdoor Service. This award granted continued accreditation by the National Lutheran Schools Association to St. John’s through 2010. Again thanks to everyone who helped in this arduous task. Special thanks to Orv Ulmer, Jan Martinsen, Annette Williams and David Wippich who collectively served on the steering committee that provided the catalyst for completion. Also, special thanks to Mark Bublitz for countless hours spent technologically binding information.

NLSA recognized the following three major concerns that need to be addressed for us to maintain accreditation:

a. Playground safety: We recently renovated the play area but failed to give enough distance for fall zones. Thanks to Annette Williams and her husband Jack and various others, that problem has been rectified.

b. Building air quality: We were able to purchase a large barn fan to help exhaust the building and the trustees were able to inexpensively repair the main exhaust vents in the gym. Combined, these two exhaust measures have helped us expel some of the hot air in the building. Without windows that open in the classrooms, it is difficult to draw air into the rooms. This matter has been discussed for the 22 years I have been here. We hope and pray that the Lord will continue to bless our efforts here by providing the means to better remediate this situation. But, we are grateful to have been able to take a definite positive step that can be reported on our yearly self-improvement plan.

c. Teacher planning time: A problem in this environment because we do not have other teachers coming in to teach art, PE, music, etc. The only real solution is to hire additional part time certified faculty in specialty areas. Currently, we have been able to combine a few classes and with Pastor Young teaching 7/8 confirmation combined and Dave Wippich teaching various classes, we are able to offer some additional time for teachers at the expense of our work. We also are grateful to Renee Scherer who has volunteered to teach art to a few classrooms; to Jamie Holt and Dana Alexander for volunteering as lunch room monitors and to Jean King and many other volunteers who help us out from time to time. We pray that the finances would be available to solve this concern. Again, it is a vital remedy for the sake of our NLSA and Department of Education — Indiana certifications.

The National Lutheran School Association Committee recommends that the faculty and ministry of the school and specific areas of the school be shared with congregational members. To this end, the faculty will be presented monthly, each explaining the following:

A. Their position here D. School responsibilities

B. Education, degree and license E. Personal, outside interests

C. Family and personal information F. Class activities

G. Personal Faith statement

All About Jan Martinsen

I’m Jan Martinsen, and I have taught fourth grade here since 1998. I received my Bachelor degree in Elementary Education from Indiana University at South Bend in December 1997, along with an endorsement in Social Studies. I hold a standard Indiana license to teach grades 1-6, grades 7-8 non -departmentalized, and Social Studies grades 1-9. This fall, I will be writing the research paper required to complete my Masters in Elementary Education from IUSB. I taught 8th grade Math at Boston Middle School for one semester before coming to St. John’s.

Besides teaching all 4th grade subjects, I am in charge of the building Spelling Bee and have been a building representative at the District Bee, acting as judge or pronouncer for several years. Two years ago, I developed the Academic Challenge for 4th and 5th graders, with the assistance of several teachers and parents. This year we hope to expand it to include students in grades 6-8. As all teachers, I serve on committees to plan the celebration of National Lutheran Schools Week and other events, as the year progresses.

Fourth graders study Indiana History, which begins with a trip to the Pioneer Village at La Porte County Fairgrounds and culminates with an annual field trip to Conner Prairie, a living history museum northeast of Indianapolis. Fourth grade is also the first year students

have to write out math problems instead of suing a worksheet, and the year that “reading to learn” replaces “learning to read,” with a strong emphasis on comprehension and application of information. Another annual field trip takes us to the Art Institute in Chicago to see the original works of some of the artists we study throughout the year.

Outside of school, I enjoy reading, sewing, arts and crafts, and traveling. This summer I had the privilege of traveling to Italy to study mosaic art, thanks to a grant from the Lily Endowment’s Teacher Creativity Fellowship Program. The trip was truly inspiring on several levels. The art, history, and culture come alive when you are walking on the very stones as those people whose lives we have studies in books.

I have four children, whose locations also give me an opportunity for travel. Ben, 20 years old, attends Purdue University and plans to become an elementary teacher; Valerie, 21, finished 3 years at Valparaiso University and is in her first of four years at Indiana University Dental School in Indianapolis; Meghan, 26, lives in Highland, Indiana and attends Indiana University Northwest and teaches gymnastics in the Chicago area; and Joe, 29, lives in Muncie, Indiana and married in September. He graduated from Indiana University, Bloomington in 1997. (As you can see, Ben is the rebel who defected to Purdue!)

I have been a member of St. John’s nearly all my life, with the exception of a couple years during college when my membership was transferred to Faith Lutheran in Bloomington. I attended St. John’s

School from Kindergarten through 6th grade, when my family moved to Westville. It is so good to be teaching at St. John’s where the Word of God can be freely spoken and prayer is a part of our daily lives. The Christian fellowship with staff and parents is crucial in keeping me focused and revitalized. I know that God has placed me at St. John’s as part of His life plan for all of us, that we might be a blessing to each other. I am reminded of this everyday as this verse hangs near the door of my classroom: “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11.

Fund Raisers for the School

Thrivent Members:

Thrivent members (formerly AAL & LB) who wish to donate money to St. John’s Lutheran School, in support of the education program may have their financial gift enhanced by Thrivent Financial. Thrivent will contribute 50 cents for every dollar that a member donates to St. John’s School. Members may give $50 to $400, the maximum If you are not a Thrivent member, you may still participate by becoming an associate member for $10 per year. The associate member gift range is $25 to $200, the maximum. Your checks may be made payable to St. John’s Lutheran School. You may designate a specific area—technology, library, athletic, or music. It is our goal to wire all classrooms for internet and place up-to-date computers in each classroom. To date, we have received $400. The gift was enhanced by $200 for a total of $600. Please contact Principal, David Wippich or Imogene Dahl, if you are able to help us acquire matching funds.

The Giving Plus Program is funded on a year-to-year basis. Since funds are limited, it may not be possible to fully support all eligible gifts in any given year. This district has $20 million allotted for this calendar year — $12 million has already been used.

We would appreciate your support for this program.

Boxtops for Education

Boxtops for Education coupons are found on hundreds of General Mills products. Each boxtop coupon turned in earns 10 cents for our school. Last year we raised over $700. Our Fall Classroom contest will start September 29. Give boxtops to your favorite student or turn them in to the school office.

Ink and Laser Cartridges:

Recycle your empty ink and laser cartridges and turn them into cash for St. John’s Lutheran School. A receptacle is at the entrance of the school for your contribution.

Campbell Labels:

The school is still collecting Campbell’s canned food labels.

Pizza Hut Night:

The third Wednesday of every month is Pizza Hut night — October 15, 2003 to be exact — between the hours of 4:00 and 11:00 p.m. only. Identify yourself as a member of St. John’s when ordering (362-3000) your pizza. We get 20% of the profits and all money goes toward the 7th and 8th grade class trip. You may also use vendor coupons.

Upcoming Events at St. John’s

From the Fish Fry Committee:

October 10 is the next Fish Fry – 4-7:00 p.m. Ticket prices will remain the same: $6.00 advance and carry-out dinners; $6.50 at the door and children under 12, $3.50. Please call the church office if you can help the afternoon before in preparing or the night of the fish fry. The tasks are wrapping utensils in napkins; putting cole slaw and tartar sauce into serving cups; greeting guests, selling and taking tickets and directing diners to appropriate serving areas. We will also accept donations. Some of the fish fry proceeds will go to the 7th and 8th grade field trips

Pie bakers are needed for the fish fry. Please bring pies to the cafeteria any time before 2 p.m. on that day or call Annette Williams at 326-8017.

News From Various Boards and Committees

From the Director of Music Ministries:

The Lord has bestowed such incredible blessings on St. John’s through the gifts He has given you. The gift of our pipe organ given to us in 1953 has been in need of some upgrading and repairs to make it through the 21 Century. Beginning Octoberl, the repairs and upgrades will be done. It will take approximately 3-4 weeks to be completed. It is our goal to begin utilizing the organ in worship again on October 26, Reformation Sunday. Fabry Organ Company, the business making the repairs, has agreed to do the work without the church having the entire $67,355.00 before the completion of the project. Although we have raised most of the funds needed for the project, we still need $11,000.00. Your Church needs you,. We are planning a rededication service and recital following the completion of the project. There will also be a video made showing the transformation of the organ. If you have any questions, please call Matt Nelson at 380-9030.

The Walther League Chorus will present its 70th Annual Christmas Concert on Sunday, December 7, 2003 at 4:00 p.m. We will be sharing the gift of music with many fellow musicians from the northwest Indiana area. For many of these musicians, music is their way of life. So, we must pay them for their time and talent! We are asking individuals, organizations, as well as local business to help by sponsoring many of these musicians. If you would like to sponsor an artist, please call Matt Nelson at 380-9030. Thank you for helping us share the good news of Christmas.

From the School Board:

St. John’s School Board/Parent Teacher League are looking for organizations and/or people to help prepare and serve food at the Salvation Army on the third Friday of every month from 5:00-7:30 p.m. We feel this is a great outreach opportunity for our church and school. If you or your group is interested, please contact Annette Williams at 326-8017. Our firt time is September 19, 2003. Children are welcome to come with adult supervision.

St. John’s School Board is looking for somebody to research the possibility of forming a St. John’s Lutheran School of La Porte, Indiana Alumni Association. If you are interested in researching this, please call Dave Wippich at school 362-6692 or Annette Williams at 326-8017.

From the Board of Public Relations:

THANKS to all our Newspaper Stuffers for the new sign in front of our church. Dollars earned from their donated time enabled purchase of the updated replacement. This sign can be an evangelism tool for getting our congregation known in the community. By connecting daily happenings and life in the Good News, we have a wonderful message to share.

Our Board also appreciates the time and talents of Walt Kegebein, Jim Crum, Barry Siddall, Matt Nelson, Charles Link, Andrew Vaughn and Bob Keller who worked on preparation of the foundation. We are Blessed!  - Peggy, Lorraine, Pauletta, Marlene and Dolores

The Service and Business Directories will be available for members soon.

From Our Congregational President:

Dear Brothers and sisters of St. John’s:

Many positive things and events have occurred here in the last couple months. First of all, God has answered our prayers and sent us a new shepherd, Pastor David Young, to guide and lead this congregation. Also, He has answered our prayers and sent us Dave and Beth Hoeppner to help guide and educate our young people who attend our day school. I am confident that we, as a congregation, are very thankful that God has guided our new brothers and sister to our congregation. Their experience and special talents can only help our ministry here at St. John’s.

Also, I would like to welcome back our present staff. We, as a congregation, are looking forward to a great and positively enriched year! This can only occur with God’s blessings upon us. So in the evening and before retiring for the night, let God know how much you appreciate the talented staff with which He has so graciously blessed this congregation.

Many of our members have stepped forward and volunteered their time to help us. I would like to acknowledge those who have worked very hard on the outside of the church and school. Your thoughtfulness and unselfish time has shown through your hard work. Those individuals, who drive by, have been witnessing our congregation’s pride and spirit! I would have attempted to list those individuals, but I might miss a name or two. So once, again…..THANKS EVERYONE!!!!!

Always remember, as a congregation, we have come together for a reason. God had, and will always have, a plan and reason for bringing us all together. Let us work together in true harmony and enthusiastic spirit as faithful brothers and sisters. May we at all times exhibit our best so God may look down at His people at St. John’s and be proud at what we have accomplished while doing what He expects of each and everyone of us.

God’s Blessings to all,

Chuck Link, Jr., Congregational President
