This Week at St. John’s

Third Sunday in Lent — March 19, 2006

From Pastor Young:

Welcome! We welcome all to this worship place where we proclaim Christ crucified! As we gather for worship, we are confronted once again by the amazing grace of God in sending Jesus Christ as our Savior. God erects a cross of death that we might look up and be live. Too some, it is too simple. To others, it is outright foolishness. But to us, it is the wisdom of God at work, reconciling the world to Himself.

Next Sunday will be “Short Sermon Sunday,” sponsored by a generous donation to our congregation at the LILY Event last February. Be blessed and come!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Immediate need—water softener for our school building:

All we need is either 19 people to contribute $100 each or 38 people to contribute $50 each and the $1900 project can be completed. Contributions in any amount will be greatly appreciated and may be turned in to the Church Office.  We would like to reach this goal by April 1, 2006.

From the Trustees:

Our long-awaited fish fry will be March 24, 2006, 4-7 pm in the school gymnasium. Because the price of fish has increased, our ticket prices this year are $6.75 in advance and $7.75 at the door. Tickets for children under 12 are $3.50. Carry outs will be available. Tickets are available in the church office.

“His Word, Our Joy”:

“His Word, Our Joy” will meet next Sunday at 6:30 pm in the music room. The topic will be “Fruits of the Spirit”. The children will make cards to encourage the older and sick to be faithful.

Mission Trip:

The 6th and 7th grades are selling Butter Braids for their mission trip fundraiser. The sale ends March 26 and the cost of each Braid is $9.00, payable at time of order. The Braids will be in on April 10th, just in time for Easter and confirmation or graduation parties. Contact a St. John’s 6th or 7th grader or call Renee Scherer at 325-8831.

From the Board of Parish Fellowship:

The Board of Parish Fellowship is looking for some additional members. This has become a very active and hard working board, and they could use more help. Some of their responsibilities include; Fellowship Coffees with monthly “Specialty Fests”, soup suppers, progressive dinners, recognition celebrations, new member welcomes and annual hog roast/church picnic. If you are interested in helping out, please call Linda Peters at 393-3496.

From St. John’s Thrift Shop:

We are in urgent need of more volunteers at our Thrift Shop! Shifts are from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Any of you ladies who could give three or more hours a month of your time, please call Arlene Hacker at 362-8916. Your willingness to help will be most appreciated and of great benefit to our congregation.

Easter Lilies:

It is time for us to start asking for donations for the Easter Lilies. We do appreciate all your help in the past and pray that you will be so generous again this year. The cost per lily is $10.00. You can make your donation to the church office, Kathy Page, Joan Scherer, or Sherrill Lee. The lilies will be taken down after the second service on the Sunday following Easter (April 23). If you are going to take your lily, please be there at that time. If not for yourself, maybe you know someone who would really appreciate a flower and a visit from you. Thank you again for your donations to the flower fund.

Donations:

Mark and Lesa Hill made a donation to the HVAC fund in honor and celebration of their 15th Wedding Anniversary on March 16, 2006

SPECIAL NEEDS: Persons unable to climb stairs to the altar are invited to sit in the extra-wide front pews to receive communion or to place a walker.

ST. JOHN’S COMMUNION STATEMENT: As a member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, we believe Scripture teaches that the Lord's Supper is a precious gift of God in which Christ gives us His true body and blood (in a miraculous way), together with the bread and wine, for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith. Because the Bible teaches that this sacrament may also be spiritually harmful if misused, St. John’s communes only those instructed in the teachings of the LCMS and our church who have confessed their faith in these teachings. Prompted by the love for God’s Word, love for God’s people, and love for the Bible’s deep concern for doctrinal truth (Romans 16:17), guests who desire to commune are asked to speak with the pastor before service.

FELLOWSHIP COFFEE: All are invited to our Fellowship Coffee across the driveway in our School Cafeteria following the 8:00 AM Sunday Service.

SUNDAY SCHOOL begins at 9:25 AM in the Church Lower Level.

BIBLE CLASSES: Adult Bible Study follows the Fellowship Coffee in the Cafeteria at 9:30 AM.
