This Week at St. John’s Sunday of the Passion—Palm Sunday April 9, 2006 From Pastor Young: Good Morning! Today we celebrate a Sunday with two names-Palm Sunday and Passion Sunday. To remember with joy our Lord's triumphant entry into Jerusalem at the beginning of Holy Week, and to reflect on his awful suffering and death, all in the same service, is almost more than we can manage. A strong tension is created in us, which is exactly what is supposed to happen. It shouldn't have happened this way, not to the Son of God. Yet because of God's love for us, it did happen this way--for us! ANNOUNCEMENTS Church Attendance: Now that the “Faith-based Tuition” program has started, it is very important for the office to keep accurate attendance records. Parents, please help us out by making sure that everyone in your family is listed individually and legibly on the Fellowship Pad. Please use first and last names, so that the attendance posters know who you are! Thank you. From the Youth Group: We would like to remind everyone that we will be sponsoring Easter Breakfast at 8:00 am on Easter morning, and everyone is invited. We also have a list of items we need to purchase for this breakfast on an insert in this bulletin. Any donations would be greatly appreciated. From the Sunday School: Thanks to the many generous donations of books, our Sunday School Library is beginning to take shape. We are now in need of some free-standing book shelves. If you have any that you aren’t using, and would like to donate to the Sunday School, please call Rhonda McConnell at 369-9680 or Jim Peters at 393-3496. Thank you. Mark your calendar—June 4 is the date of the Sunday School Picnic, held after the 10:45 am service. New this year will be a Fun Fair, with games, activities and fun for kids of all ages! From the Finance Committee: Contribution statements for 2005 will be available in the church office until April 17. After that date, they will be destroyed. If you need your statement, please pick it up by that date. The Finance Committee now has the capability of providing contributors with a quarterly contribution statement, if requested. Please speak to Linda Peters or Ron Scherer for more information. From the Trustees: Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 22, from 7 am-12 pm. That is when the trustees are having a work day to clean up the church and school grounds. Anyone able and willing to help us out will be greatly appreciated. His Word, Our Joy: “His Word, Our Joy” meets tonight at 6:30 PM in the Music Room. The theme for tonight will be another fruit of the Spirit. There will be reading from the book “The Little Rose of Sharon” and an Easter craft. VBS: Summer vacation and Vacation Bible School will be here soon! Mark your calendars and round up the kids and their friends for a good time of play and learning about Jesus. The dates are July 24-28. Thanks: I wish to thank the Pastors, as well as, the rest of my St. John’s family for your prayers while I received knee replacement surgery. I am recuperating at home and receiving physical therapy. I look forward to being able to return to church soon. Yours in Christ, Gloria Arndt Donations: Helen Smith has made a donation to the School HVAC Fund in loving memory of her husband, Roy V. PALM SUNDAY/SUNDAY OF THE PASSION April 9th, 2006 Pre-service Music: Handbell Choir Children are invited to gather in the narthex before service with palms and proceed in with the Pastors and the choir. (Please turn to the back of the church at the ringing of the bells.) P The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit X be with you all. C And with your spirit. P Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. C Hosanna to the Son of David. P Let us pray. Most merciful God, as the people of Jerusalem, with palms in their hands, gathered to greet your dearly beloved Son when he came into his Holy City, grant that we may ever hail him as our King and, when he comes again, may go forth to meet him with trusting and steadfast hearts and follow him in the way that leads to eternal life; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen THE PALM SUNDAY GOSPEL Mark 11:1-11 P A reading of the Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the eleventh chapter. C Glory to you, O Lord. A As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ tell him, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’” They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!” “Hosanna in the highest!” Jesus entered Jerusalem and went to the temple. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to you, O Christ. P Let us go forth in peace C in the name of the Lord. PROCESSIONAL HYMN: LW 102 “All Glory, Laud, and Honor” (THE PROCESSION into the church begins with branches raised, with the choir and children following the pastor and singing with the congregation.)COLLECT OF THE DAY P The Lord be with you. C And with your spirit. P Let us pray: Almighty and everlasting God the Father, who sent your Son to take our nature upon him and to suffer death on the cross that all mankind should follow the example of his great humility, mercifully grant that we may both follow the example of our Savior Jesus Christ in his patience and also have our portion in his resurrection; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C AMEN. (Please be seated) HYMN: LW 106 “Hosanna, Loud Hosanna” Old Testament Reading: Zechariah 9:9-10 Gradual (Bulletin Insert) Epistle Reading: Philippians 2:5-11 WLC: “Behold the King” by Martin
A RESPONSIVE READING OF THE PASSION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST From the Gospel of St. Mark, the fifteenth chapter (15:1-39) Pastor: Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, reached a decision. They bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate. Pilate asked: Women: “Are you the king of the Jews?” Men: “Yes, it is as you say,” Pastor: The chief priests accused him of many things. So again Pilate asked him, Women: “Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of.” Pastor: But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed. Now it was the custom at the Feast to release a prisoner whom the people requested. A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising. The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did. Men: “Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?” Pastor: Pilate asked, knowing it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead. Pilate asked them. Women: “What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Congregation: “Crucify him!” Men: “Why? What crime has he committed?” Pastor: asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, Congregation: “Crucify him!” Pastor: Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified. The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. And they began to call out to him, Congregation: “Hail, king of the Jews!” Pastor: Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him. HYMN: LW 119 “O Dearest Jesus, What Law Have You Broken” (Verses 1-4) Pastor: A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross. They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the Skull). Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. Congregation: And they crucified him. Pastor: Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get. It was the third hour when they crucified him. The written notice of the charge against him read: Congregation: THE KING OF THE JEWS. Pastor: They crucified two robbers with him, one on his right and one on his left. Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, Congregation: “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, come down from the cross and save yourself!” Pastor: In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. Men: “He saved others, but he can’t save himself! Women: Let this Christ, this King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Pastor: Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him. At the sixth hour darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?”—which means, Congregation: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Pastor: When some of those standing near heard this, they said, Women: “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.” Pastor: One man ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink. Men: “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down.” Pastor: With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, heard his cry and saw how he died, he said, Congregation: “Surely this man was the Son of God!” HYMN: LW 119 “O Dearest Jesus, What Law Have You Broken” (Verses 5-7—– Offering is received at this time.) Sermon: “Tearing the Temple Curtain” COLLECT OF THE DAY (Bulletin Insert) LORD’S PRAYER BENEDICTION CLOSING HYMN: HS98 826 “No Tramp of Soldiers’ Marching Feet”
