This Week at St. John’s

Fourth Sunday of Easter — May 7, 2006

From Pastor Brauer-Welcome in the name of the Good Shepherd,

Jesus Christ! “The Lord is my Shepherd.” These words begin that Psalm which is most beloved. Yet who can truly say these words? The answer will surprise you. Just as only the faithful can pray the Lord’s Prayer, so only the faithful can confess that Jesus is their Good Shepherd. It is not we who make this claim but it is Jesus who laid down His life for sheep that like to wander. Yet Christ tends and feeds you with Word and Sacrament. He leads you on His path of righteousness, even as that path leads you through the valley of the shadow of death. The faithful have no fear. As you are in His house today, may you be so blessed with that faith that trusts the Good Shepherd in all you do and wherever He leads you!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Are you interested in joining St. John’s? Would you like a refresher course in some of the things our church believes and confesses?

Our new Discipleship course, taught by Pastor Young, will begin next Sunday, May 14 at 9:30 am during our Bible Class hour. Young and old alike are invited to this Bible class. Please contact the church office to sign up and for more details!

Voter’s Meeting: The next Voter’s Meeting will be on Wednesday, May 10, at 7:00 pm. In the school cafeteria. Please try to attend.

From the Board of Parish Fellowship: We have several “special”

Sundays coming up.

On Sunday, May 21, we will be having a “Send-off” for Bill Trowbridge between services at 9:15 am. He will be leaving for the Seminary in June. Watch future bulletins for more information.

On Sunday, June 4, we will be Honoring Marlene Will for her 40 years as a Lutheran School Teacher with a Retirement Open-house from 4-7 pm.

Sunday, June 11, is Strawberry Shortcake Day—we will be serving strawberry shortcake at Fellowship Coffee!

Softball, Softball, Softball: St. John’s family softball begins again in May. Everyone is welcome and it’s great fun for “kids” of all ages! If enough people sign up, we could have our own league. Anyone interested in

participating should contact Pastor Young.

His Word, Our Joy: “His Word, Our Joy” will not be held tonight due to Confirmation. The next meeting date will be May 21.

News from Sunday School: The Fun Fair will be June 4 from 1-2:30 pm and it promises to be lots of fun for all children of the Congregation! We need volunteers to bring baked goods for the Cake Walk and to help at the games and activities. Sign up sheets are in this bulletin and the back of the church. They can be placed in the boxes in the church, church office, or church basement. Any questions? Call Maria Surma (324-9711), Stephanie Kessler (324-3741) or contact any Sunday School Teacher.

Annual Parking Lot & Church/School Rummage Sale: Start making plans now for the Annual Parking Lot Sale on Saturday, June 17 from 8 am–1 pm. For $7 you may rent a space to sell your garage sale items, crafts, plants, etc. Space rental proceeds go for advertising and to the church and school. You keep the profits from selling your wares!

An added feature this year will be a St. John’s Church/School Rummage Sale held outdoors at the same time as the parking lot sale. We need your help with this. Please look through your closets and basements for any items you could donate to the rummage sale. Proceeds from this sale will be shared equally between the church and school. We are looking for clean, sellable items that can be carried by one person—please, NO LARGE FURNITURE, LARGE APPLIANCES, and NO CLOTHING! Most importantly, bring your donations to the school after school is out for the summer (June 7-16). With your help, this can become an annual project to help your church and school.

Any group or class interested in selling refreshments at this sale, for their own profit, please call Ellen Heidel at 362-5694 for more information.

Thanks: A special thank you to those who kept me in their prayers during my time of illness. Dan Foster

Thanks to everyone for the many visits, cards, calls and prayers while I was in the hospital. They were truly a great help in my recovery. Blessings to all of you. Edith Hoeppner

Thanks to everyone who shopped at Sherwin-Williams with their “Neighbor to Neighbor Card”. We just received our first check of $88.59 from them this week. It is a continuing program, so keep using your

discount card when shopping there. If you need a card, we have more in the church office.

Donations: Mrs. John A. Rose III, Mr. And Mrs. Charles Baima and

Family, and Ms. Deborah Mansfield and Family made a donation to the HVAC Fund in loving memory of John A. Rose III, whose death date was May 6.

SPECIAL NEEDS: Persons unable to climb stairs to the altar are invited to sit in the extra-wide front pews to receive communion or to place a walker.

ST. JOHN’S COMMUNION STATEMENT: As a member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, we believe Scripture teaches that the Lord's Supper is a precious gift of God in which Christ gives us His true body and blood (in a miraculous way), together with the bread and wine, for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith. Because the Bible teaches that this sacrament may also be spiritually harmful if misused, St. John’s communes only those instructed in the teachings of the LCMS and our church who have confessed their faith in these teachings. Prompted by the love for God’s Word, love for God’s people, and love for the Bible’s deep concern for doctrinal truth (Romans 16:17), guests who desire to commune are asked to speak with the pastor before service.

FELLOWSHIP COFFEE: All are invited to our Fellowship Coffee across the driveway in our School Cafeteria following the 8:00 AM Sunday Service.

SUNDAY SCHOOL begins at 9:25 AM in the Church Lower Level.

Invocation/Confession/Absolution

P: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

P: Beloved in the Lord. Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, imploring Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to grant us forgiveness. Our help is in the name of the Lord.

Who made heaven and earth.

P: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord.

C: And You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

O almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess to You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your punishment now and forever. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor sinful being.

P: Upon this your confession, I, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God to all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

P: Let us pray. Almighty God, merciful Father, since You have wakened from death the Shepherd of Your sheep, grant us your Holy Spirit that we may know the voice of our Shepherd and follow Him that sin and death may never pluck us out of Your hand; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.
