This Week at St. John’s

The Day of Pentecost - June 4, 2006

Today

12-2:30 pm-S. School Picnic and Fun Fair

4-7 pm-Marlene Will Retirement Party

Welcome to worship! Today we celebrate the work of the third person of the Triune God---the Holy Spirit. Proceeding from the Father, He is sent by the Son as the promised presence of God with us after the Ascension. Now the Spirit is at work within us to create and sustain faith in the redemptive work of our Lord, Jesus Christ. The Spirit confronts us with our prideful arrogance and our struggle with the absence of God in our daily lives. The Spirit produces in us heartfelt cries for God's mercy. The Spirit assures us that God is still at work within us and in our world. Through the Word the Spirit empowers us to be faithful in worship and fruitful in witness.

Annual Parking Lot & Church/School Rummage Sale:

Beginning Wednesday, June 7-Friday, June 16, you may bring your donations for the church/school rummage sale to the school gym. Please remember that we are not accepting clothing, large appliances or heavy furniture. If you have any questions about the sale, call Ellen Heidel at 362-5694.

You can still reserve a space in the parking lot sale to sell your own garage sale items. The rummage sale and parking lot sale will both be held Saturday, June 17, from 8 am-1 pm. We hope to see you there!

Sunday, June 11, is Strawberry Shortcake Day:

The Board of Parish Fellowship will prepare and serve this wonderful springtime dessert between services during Fellowship Coffee. A $2.00 donation per family is requested to defray costs of the upcoming annual Hog Roast/Family Picnic, which will be Sunday, August 27, 2006. Mark your calendars now!

Thanks from Sue Rosselli:

The church office has received a letter of thanks from Sue Rosselli to all of you for your prayers of healing during her recent health crisis. Sue is well on her way to recovery and shared her miraculous healing story with us. She gave her permission for it to be printed in our next newsletter, so watch for it in the July issue.

Activities Committee:

The Activities Committee will meet Monday, June 5, 2006 at 1:15 pm in the Ladies Lounge.

From the Day School:

This summer, St. John’s School is offering two science enrichment classes for the children of the school and congregation. The camps will be taught by Maria Surma, former high school science teacher and current instructor of science education at Purdue University North Central. The camps will run June 12-23, M-F from 9 am-12 noon in the church basement. “Animals Around the World” will be featured the first week, June 12-16, for students entering grades 1 and 2 in the fall, and “Science Explorations” will fill the second week, June 19-23, for students entering grades 3-5. Hands-on science activities, games, crafts, snacks, and more will fill each day. Cost per student is $100, with discounts for additional siblings. Enrollment is limited to 12 students each week, and there are a few openings left in each class. Registration forms are in the School and Church Offices, and payment must be made at registration. If you have any questions, please call Maria Surma at 324-9711.

Vacation Bible School:

Our Summer Vacation Bible School dates have been announced. Mark your calendars for the last week of July, July 24-28. Workers, assistants, crew leaders, refreshment makers and other helpers are being recruited; if you would like to help or wish to make a contribution to help defray expenses, please stop by or call the Church Office at 362-3726. Begin telling your neighbors about our VBS and invite them to come!

Annual Planning Meeting in August:

Please mark your calendars for Saturday, August 12 starting at 9 am And help us plan for 2006-2007 as a Church. Everyone in the congregation is invited to participate; and we ask at least one representative from each board, committee, circle or group at St. John’s Lutheran Church and School to be present. We will look at our future plans, especially as we make plans to celebrate St. John’s 150 Anniversary! We will begin with a ‘Breakfast Brunch Pot Luck,’ a time to gather around a meal of breakfast delights. Please start thinking of that recipe for a breakfast casserole or baked goods to share. After Bible study, we will take a look at each month and coordinate plans. Hopefully by August each board, committee, circle, and organization at St. John’s will have an idea of activities that will come so that plans may come together. If you have questions, please call Pastor Brauer.

A Note from Your Offering Envelopes:

Remember me? I’m your servant who takes your offering to church when you attend. You faithfully bring me to the House of God to worship your Savior. Lots of work continues during the summer months as the bills and salaries need to be paid. Mission work also continues. Your faithful contribution enables your church officers to do the work God has set before you. God continues to provide you with health and strength and all that is needed to support you in life. He even puts into your pocketbook what He uses to further His kingdom. Your task is to bring it to Him in your offering. May God so bless you more as you serve Him in His righteousness!

Correction:

The date for the next “His Word, Our Joy” is June 25. It was incorrectly listed on the June Newsletter Calendar as June 18.

SPECIAL NEEDS: Persons unable to climb stairs to the altar are invited to sit in the extra-wide front pews to receive communion or to place a walker.

ST. JOHN’S COMMUNION STATEMENT: As a member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, we believe Scripture teaches that the Lord's Supper is a precious gift of God in which Christ gives us His true body and blood (in a miraculous way), together with the bread and wine, for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith. Because the Bible teaches that this sacrament may also be spiritually harmful if misused, St. John’s communes only those instructed in the teachings of the LCMS and our church who have confessed their faith in these teachings. Prompted by the love for God’s Word, love for God’s people, and love for the Bible’s deep concern for doctrinal truth (Romans 16:17), guests who desire to commune are asked to speak with the pastor before service.

FELLOWSHIP COFFEE: All are invited to our Fellowship Coffee across the driveway in our School Cafeteria following the 8:00 AM Sunday Service.

BIBLE CLASSES: Adult Bible Study follows the Fellowship Coffee in the Cafeteria at 9:30 AM.

TEEN BIBLE STUDY meets in the Youth Room at 9:30 AM
