This Week at St. John’s 3rd Sunday after the Epiphany - January 21, 2007
From Pastor Young Good morning! Today we hear the proclamation from Jesus that He has fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah by coming to “preach the good news to the poor” and to “proclaim freedom for prisoners.” He “proclaims the year of the Lord’s favor” and brings freedom and deliverance to sin's captives. The message of release from sin is one we hear with joy!
ANNOUNCEMENTS A new Bible Study has begun! A new Bible Study, “The Devil,” continues today at 9:30 am. In the cafeteria. All who attend will receive a copy of “GOOD NEWS,” issue 26, which will serve as our study guide for this very enlightening look at the great deceiver and how he works in your world today. All are invited! 150th Committee Meeting: The meeting of the 150th Anniversary Committee will be this Wednesday, January 24 at 7:00 pm. Can Collection: The 150th Anniversary Committee is sponsoring two upcoming can collections to help fund our Anniversary Celebrations. They will coincide with Market Day dates. The next two dates are Saturday, January 27 and Saturday, March 24. There may be additional dates announced at a later time. Please drop cans off in the parking lot between the school and church on those Saturday mornings between 9 am and 11 am. Thank you for your continued support! From the Finance Committee: Year-end financial statements are ready and will be available in the church office for those wanting one. Contact Linda Peters or Ron Scherer with any questions. Contribution envelopes are still available for pick-up in the church basement. Please note that your envelope number may have changed. From the Trustees: The trustees would like to thank everyone who served on a board or committee this past year, our church could not function without willing volunteers. We ask that anyone not presently serving, please return any keys you have to the church office. Thank You From Sue Rosselli: Do you sing in the shower? In the car? With the radio in the living room when nobody's home? That's wonderful, but we need you HERE! Singing to the Lord is a wonderful and high calling- remember David? Remember Asaph? They never missed a chance to sing to the Lord! Seriously, as with all our ministries, when some retire their faithful service and others begin service in other areas, new people are needed to continue the work that the Lord started. We are especially in need of a FEW GOOD MEN, but all ladies will also certainly be welcomed and appreciated. We meet on Mondays at 7:00 P.M. in the Music Room of the school. We are beginning to practice for the seasons of Lent and Easter, and for our 150th anniversary celebration. "Behold, My servants shall sing for joy of heart. Isaiah 65:14. “His Word, Our Joy’: Want to sing, pray and gather with others tonight? Come and join “His Word, Our Joy” as we focus on “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” We will meet in the music room at 6:30 PM for about 45 minutes with an activity for the children, thoughts for the adults, and singing for everyone. From the Board of Parish Fellowship: St. John's 150th Anniversary celebratory events start January 2007. Every Member Recommitment Sunday is January 28, 2007 (this is not a football Sunday). Following the 10:45 a.m. worship service, we will have a noon potluck. Every family is asked to bring a dish or two of generous proportions to enable us to have enough food for everyone. You may bring your dishes of food to the kitchen before the service to keep cold or hot. Please bring table service for your family. Beverages will be provided. Most importantly, it is the kick-off for St. John's 150th Anniversary. You will learn of the celebration plans during 2007 as well as the theme, logo, and anniversary hymn that best depicts this year-long celebration. More from the Board of Parish Fellowship: Is anyone interested in serving on the Board of Parish Fellowship? We would like to expand our membership—men or women are welcome. activities are many and we need new members to help out. Please contact Marilyn Boardman at 362-7256 to volunteer your services. The Lenten Soup Suppers will be served beginning February 28, at 5:30 pm. Would a board, circle or individual/s like to participate? Dates available are Wednesday evenings March 7, 14, 21 and 28. We want to keep the menu consistent, and limited to soups, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the kids, crusty breads, crackers and cookies or brownies. Please call Marilyn Boardman at 362-7256. From the Willing Servants: The Willing Servants (Funeral Dinner Committee) would like to thank all the ladies for their time and dishes of food, so generously donated this past year. Unfortunately, our calling list is being depleted, and we are always looking for new people to help. If you are currently not on our Calling List and would like to help in this labor of love, please call Jo Borg at 326-6089 or Louise Mellenthin at 324-9257. Without your help we cannot function. Washington D.C. Trip: St. John’s 6th, 7th and 8th grade students are selling Papa John’s Pizza coupons to help pay for their Washington D.C. trip this spring. Please contact any 6th, 7th or 8th grader, the school office or Shireen Shortt, at 324-6288, for more information or to purchase coupons. SPECIAL NEEDS: Persons unable to climb stairs to the altar are invited to sit in the extra-wide front pews to receive communion or to place a walker. ST. JOHN’S COMMUNION STATEMENT: As a member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, we believe Scripture teaches that the Lord's Supper is a precious gift of God in which Christ gives us His true body and blood (in a miraculous way), together with the bread and wine, for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith. Because the Bible teaches that this sacrament may also be spiritually harmful if misused, St. John’s communes only those instructed in the teachings of the LCMS and our church who have confessed their faith in these teachings. Prompted by the love for God’s Word, love for God’s people, and love for the Bible’s deep concern for doctrinal truth (Romans 16:17), guests who desire to commune are asked to speak with the pastor before service.FELLOWSHIP COFFEE: All are invited to our Fellowship Coffee across the driveway in our School Cafeteria following the 8:00 AM Sunday Service.
