This Week at St. John’s

4th Sunday after the Epiphany - January 28, 2007

From Pastor Brauer

Welcome to St. John’s on our Every Member Sunday!  Jeremiah lamented, “But I’m just a youth! I don’t know how to speak!” St. Paul would say that, too, but also said he put childish ways behind him. Just as God touched the mouth of Jeremiah, so He touches our mouths as we confess His holy name with our lips. He touches our mouths with His Body and blood in the Sacrament. He touches our lives daily with His love, love not stained by worldly desires, but poured out from His Cross. The message of the Cross of Jesus has all authority and the message of His love is the greatest which endures all things, even in our times when we may not know how to speak for Jesus.

Also, please remember to come to Fellowship Coffee on Sunday, February 11. That day will be our Chocolate Fest. Come one and come all!

Pizza Coupons: The 6th-8th grade students are selling Papa John’s Pizza coupons to help raise money for their class trip to Washington D.C. trip. They will be for sale through February 9, and are available from any 6th-8th grader or after church on Sundays. They are also selling sub sandwiches for Super bowl Sunday, February 4. (See insert for details)

From the Finance Committee: Individual year-end financial statements are ready and will be available in the church office for those wanting one. Contact Linda Peters or Ron Scherer with any questions.

Contribution envelopes are still available for pick-up in the church basement. Please note that your envelope number may have changed.

St. John’s Shadetree Mechanics for God: Are you a “Shadetree” Mechanic for God? Are you interested in using your mechanical skills to serve our congregation? Would you like to learn more about how stuff works? St. John’s is going to be starting a new fellowship hour that will allow you to do these things. We are interested in helping people get their “small engine” equipment ready for spring, i.e. lawn mowers, weed eaters, roto-tillers, etc. We will also do light work on vehicles, oil changes, brakes, tire rotation, etc. Our first meeting is at 7:00 pm on Thursday, February 1. Thereafter we will meet the last Thursday of the month. We will meet at Jim Peters’ garage in Kingsbury. All are invited, and feel free to bring your kids. We are looking for projects to get our group started. Any member who has a project they would like help with can contact Luke Vandercar or Jim Peters.

From the Family Circle: The Family Circle is once again selling coupon books for “Community Day,” March 3, at Carson Pirie Scott in Michigan City. Coupon books are $5.00 each and the Family Circle keeps 100% of the money they collect. The coupon books contain a $10.00 coupon, good on any item of $10.00 or more, and eight additional coupons, each good for up to 20% off almost any regular or sale priced merchandise in the store. Coupon books are available from any Family Circle member or at the Church Office. If you have any questions, please call the Church Office.

The Family Circle is now raising funds to help finance a Retreat/Bible Study on Christian Marriage for married couples.

Book of Concord: Anyone who ordered “Concordia The Lutheran Confessions”, may pick it up in the Church Office. It has been on back-order since last year.

Basketball Tournaments: The 4th & 5th grade boy’s and girl’s basketball tournaments were held here this weekend, and the 6th-8th grade tournaments will be held here this Saturday, February 3. Congratulations for a job well done and a big thank you to all coaches and students for all of your hard work and dedication.

Kroger and Al’s Certificates: The Newspaper Stuffers wish to thank all who have participated in the Al’s and Kroger certificate endeavor. Some of you have had a few questions about how the program works.

An explanation on Al’s Certificates: We purchase $1000.00 worth of certificates for $950.00. When we sell them for the full $1000.00, a $50.00 profit is made. You receive full value on your certificate. For instance, on a $20.00 certificate, if you spend less than $15, you will receive a register receipt for the unused amount to use the next time you shop. If you spend between $15 and $20, you will receive the unused amount in cash.

Update on the Kroger Card: You need to stop at the courtesy desk before shopping to add money to your card, as it takes ten minutes for the money to register in their system. By the time you get to the checkout, the money will be on your card. If you go over the amount on your card, just finish paying with cash or check so you do not have to stand and wait. Make sure to always keep your card, as you may add money to it. Also, any money left on the card always carries over to the next time you shop.

Once again, thank you for using the cards and certificates to do your grocery shopping. Our profit is given to St. John’s General Fund so it can benefit our church and school.

Duneland Lutheran High School, will once again host a Valentine Dinner dance to benefit our student activity fund. The date of the dance is February 16, at St. Joe Club, located at 2001 Franklin Street in Michigan City. For tickets or more details, call the school at 219-874-5103.

SPECIAL NEEDS: Persons unable to climb stairs to the altar are invited to sit in the extra-wide front pews to receive communion or to place a walker.

ST. JOHN’S COMMUNION STATEMENT: As a member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, we believe Scripture teaches that the Lord's Supper is a precious gift of God in which Christ gives us His true body and blood (in a miraculous way), together with the bread and wine, for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith. Because the Bible teaches that this sacrament may also be spiritually harmful if misused, St. John’s communes only those instructed in the teachings of the LCMS and our church who have confessed their faith in these teachings. Prompted by the love for God’s Word, love for God’s people, and love for the Bible’s deep concern for doctrinal truth (Romans 16:17), guests who desire to commune are asked to speak with the pastor before service.

FELLOWSHIP COFFEE: All are invited to our Fellowship Coffee across the driveway in our School Cafeteria following the 8:00 AM Sunday Service.

BIBLE CLASSES: Adult Bible Study follows the Fellowship Coffee in the Cafeteria at 9:30 AM.

SUNDAY SCHOOL begins at 9:25 AM in the Church Lower Level.
