This Week at St. John’s 5th Sunday after the Epiphany - February 4, 2007
From Pastor Young: Greetings in Christ Jesus! A special welcome to our visitors and guests! God wants Christ’s kingdom to be established and to increase. He wants His people to excel in spiritual gifts that will build up the church. Today we hear how Jesus blessed Peter and his friends with a great catch of fish. Jesus used that occasion to invite Peter to join Him in reaching out to people to bring them into His eternal kingdom. Out of thanks for all that God has done, we join Peter in answering Christ’s Call!
ANNOUNCEMENTS February 11 Worship: Next weekend, we will have special services with Holy Communion during all three services. The 7th & 8th grade Confirmation Classes will lead us in a service of teaching on the Divine Service. Sub Sandwiches: Anyone who ordered sub sandwiches, please remember to pick them up in the cafeteria today following both services. Thank you for your support! Washington D.C. Thanks: The Board of Parish Fellowship would like to thank everyone who made the Every Member Potluck a success, especially the 7th & 8th grade Confirmation Classes, Trustees, and the boards of Social Ministry and Stewardship. Special thanks to Mark Hill and Dale Fischer for delivering cans to the recycler. Our next collection date will be March 24. Keep saving! From the Family Circle: The Family Circle is once again selling coupon books for “Community Day,” March 3, at Carson Pirie Scott in Michigan City. Coupon books are $5.00 each and the Family Circle keeps 100% of the money they collect. The coupon books contain a $10.00 coupon, good on any item of $10.00 or more, and eight additional coupons, each good for up to 20% off almost any regular or sale priced merchandise the store. Coupon books are available from any Family Circle member or at the Church Office. If you have any questions, please call the Church Office. (The Family Circle is now raising funds to help finance a Retreat/Bible Study on Christian Marriage for married couples.) From the Finance Committee: Please do not use contribution envelopes that you have left from 2006, or your money may be credited to someone else's account! If you do not have 2007 contribution envelopes, they are available in the church basement or from Linda Peters or Ron Scherer. From Duneland Lutheran High School: The 2nd semester is underway at DLHS. Again this semester, the school has a “capacity” enrollment of 38. That means that its present facilities can’t handle more students. In fact, if the school had larger facilities, enrollment could easily be twice what it is now. While the property in Westville is still available, DLHS needs to find a larger interim site until the Westville location can be developed as the school’s permanent home. Recently, an offer was made to relocate the high school temporarily (for the next few years) in a renovated building at 617 Franklin Street in Michigan City. The building already houses the Michigan City Unity Foundation. Over 6,700 square feet of space is available which could accommodate 90-100 students. There is encouragement from several civic leaders for DLHS to make the move to this new location. Roger Potratz, a DLHS board member and an architect is preparing plans for conversion of the first floor of the building for DLHS use. Soon the board will make a decision on the feasibility of moving the school to the new site. DLHS’s greatest challenge now is not student recruitment. More students want to come to the school that can be accommodated. The faculty remains strong, the school’s greatest need is expanded space. Pray for DLHS and feel free to forward your comments. Please don’t forget the DLHS Valentine Dinner Dance. It will be held on Friday, February 16, 2007 beginning at 7 pm at St. Joe Club, 2001 Franklin Street, Michigan City. Contact the school office for tickets. Activities Committee: All members, please attend the next meeting on Monday, February 5, at 1:15 pm in the Ladies Lounge.

SPECIAL NEEDS: Persons unable to climb stairs to the altar are invited to sit in the extra-wide front pews to receive communion or to place a walker. ST. JOHN’S COMMUNION STATEMENT: As a member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, we believe Scripture teaches that the Lord's Supper is a precious gift of God in which Christ gives us His true body and blood (in a miraculous way), together with the bread and wine, for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith. Because the Bible teaches that this sacrament may also be spiritually harmful if misused, St. John’s communes only those instructed in the teachings of the LCMS and our church who have confessed their faith in these teachings. Prompted by the love for God’s Word, love for God’s people, and love for the Bible’s deep concern for doctrinal truth (Romans 16:17), guests who desire to commune are asked to speak with the pastor before service.FELLOWSHIP COFFEE: All are invited to our Fellowship Coffee across the driveway in our School Cafeteria following the 8:00 AM Sunday Service.
