This Week at St. John’s

1st Sunday in Lent - February 25, 2007

From Pastor Young

Greetings in the Lord! Welcome to all who worship with us today, especially those who have joined us as guests. As we gather to hear the Word of God and to receive forgiveness in the Lord's Supper, God will grace us with strength for the struggles we face outside these walls. Though we encounter temptation and trial, moments such as these offer hope and comfort and power. In the desert Jesus overcame Satan with the Word of God. We can do the same.

Announcements

Bible Study/Fellowship Coffee: Today is the last of a two week study and introduction to the new Lutheran hymnal, the Lutheran Service Book (LSB). This hymnal has been in the making for nearly eight years and was carefully prepared by The Commission on Worship of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. According to the Commission: “Among its many features, Lutheran Service Book offers: fresh expressions of the Gospel, services you know, and favorite hymns restored.” Please join us in the Chapel, after the 8 am service, to become acquainted with this new hymnal.

Because this “study” is being held in the chapel, there will be no Fellowship Coffee this week. Fellowship Coffee will resume on March 4th along with our continuing Bible Study on the devil.

Chili: The Sunday school is again challenging anyone who wants to participate in our Chili Challenge. Exciting prizes, great tasting chili and fun for all. Please come TODAY, Sunday February 25th after the 10:45 service, to the school cafeteria with a pot of your famous chili!

Or, if you don’t want to cook, come and eat! It’s only $5.00 per person for all you "dare" to eat. BYOR (bring your own Rolaids)

From the Family Circle: This is the last week to purchase coupon books from the Family Circle for Community Day,” March 3, at Carson Pirie Scott in Michigan City. Coupon books are $5.00 each and the Family Circle keeps 100% of the money they collect. The coupon books contain a $10.00 coupon, good on any item of $10.00 or more, and eight additional coupons, each good for up to 20% off almost any regular or sale priced merchandise in the store. Coupon books are available from any Family Circle member or at the Church Office. If you have any questions, please call the Church Office. (The Family Circle is now raising funds to help finance a Retreat/Bible Study on Christian Marriage for married couples.)

Washington D.C. Fundraisers: The 6th, 7th and 8th grade students and their parents are sponsoring a Bake Sale to help raise money for their Washington D. C. trip. The sale will be held at the La Porte Savings Bank-Main Branch on Friday, March 2. If anyone would like to make a donation or donate baked goods, they would be greatly appreciated. Baked donations can be brought to the school on Thursday afternoon (March 1) or Friday morning before school starts. Don’t forget to stop at the bank and purchase something for the weekend too!

The 6-8th grade students are also having a Pampered Chef fundraiser. If anyone is interested in ordering Pampered Chef products, there are catalogs and order forms in the Church and School Offices. Orders need to be in by March 2.

Tuesday Evening Bible Studies:

First Tuesday of the Month: March 6 “Elijah, the Prophet of God” continues at 7 pm in the Ladies Lounge.

Fourth Tuesday of the Month: February 27—“St. Matthias, Apostle”

From the Board of Parish Fellowship: Before each Lenten Worship Service at 7:00 p.m., Lenten Soup Suppers will be served beginning February 28 and continuing through Lent on Wednesdays, March 7, 14, 21, and 28 at 5:30 p.m. The menu consists of a variety of soups, sandwiches provided by the Family Circle, crusty breads and crackers with brownies and cookies for dessert.

March 11 Fellowship Coffee will feature a “Shamrock Fest.” Come, enjoy something green and remain for Bible study with Pastor Young. Anyone wishing to contribute a “green” treat should notify Marilyn Boardman or Marilyn Sawyer.  A donation of $2.00 per family is welcome.

Spring will be upon us soon and that means Spring Progressive Dinner on April 20. The social hour begins at 6:00 p.m. in the Ladies Lounge with appetizers; then dinner with a host family and return to the Ladies Lounge for dessert. We need hosts and participants to make it an evening of fun, food, and fellowship. Watch the weekly worship bulletins and April Newsletter for details and form to complete and return by April 9, 2007.

Adult Basketball: Church members and parents of students are invited to join in some basketball exercise, on Thursday evenings, beginning March 1, from 6:00 PM-8:00 PM. This is for men and women over age 21. Please leave the kids at home, this is a chance to get away from the kids and have some fun! We will provide the basketballs.

Church Attendance Register: Thank you to all who record your attendance each time you are at worship. Please remember to indicate your worship and communion attendance as this helps your pastors and elders in providing spiritual care. For parents of children in our Day School, the weekly recording of you and your children’s names on the attendance pads are the one way you let us know you have attended for the basis of tuition.

From Sue Rosselli: A hearty thank you to all of you who joined hearts, voices and helping hands for our special evening of praise this past

Sunday. There were smiles on every face, and we truly had a great time sharing the love and joy of the Lord! Praise the Lord, all you nations! Praise Him, all you people! For His merciful kindness is great toward us, and the truth of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord! Ps. 117: 1-2

An Invitation: The daughter of Kathryn and Carl Thode, Kathy, is having a 65th Anniversary Open House for her parents next Sunday, March 4, from 2-4 PM at Hamilton Communities in New Carlisle. She invites anyone in the congregation who would like to come wish them well, to attend.

Donations:

Nedra Huge and Teresa Stayback made a donation to the Hymnal Fund in loving memory of Louise Huge.

Elaine Heidel made a donation to the Hymnal Fund in loving memory of her parents, Louise and William Hilgendorf and Lytha, Louis and Lawrence Heidel.

SPECIAL NEEDS: Persons unable to climb stairs to the altar are invited to sit in the extra-wide front pews to receive communion or to place a walker.

ST. JOHN’S COMMUNION STATEMENT: As a member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, we believe Scripture teaches that the Lord's Supper is a precious gift of God in which Christ gives us His true body and blood (in a miraculous way), together with the bread and wine, for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith. Because the Bible teaches that this sacrament may also be spiritually harmful if misused, St. John’s communes only those instructed in the teachings of the LCMS and our church who have confessed their faith in these teachings. Prompted by the love for God’s Word, love for God’s people, and love for the Bible’s deep concern for doctrinal truth (Romans 16:17), guests who desire to commune are asked to speak with the pastor before service.

FELLOWSHIP COFFEE: All are invited to our Fellowship Coffee across the driveway in our School Cafeteria following the 8:00 AM Sunday Service.

BIBLE CLASSES: Adult Bible Study follows the Fellowship Coffee in the Cafeteria at 9:30 AM.

SUNDAY SCHOOL begins at 9:25 AM in the Church Lower Level.
