This Week at St. John’s 9th Sunday after Pentecost-July 29, 2007
The Lord be with you! We are invited to come persistently to the Lord with our needs. Our heavenly Father, who knows our needs better than we do, promises to give the good gifts for which his children ask. Today we cry with Jesus' disciples, “Lord, teach us to pray,” and we express our assurance of God's response with the words from today's psalm, “When I called, you answered me.” "A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT" Colossians 2:6-15: By God’s grace we join the Colossian Christians in living fruitful lives as His stewards. Because God’s Holy Spirit is alive and active in us we say and do those things that bring glory to our God and blessings to those whose lives we touch—and we do it all with thankful hearts! ANNOUNCEMENTS Vacation Bible School: VBS starts this week; Monday, July 30-August 3, from 9:00 AM-12:00 PM. (Please note that we have extended the time by 1 hour, due to the many activities planned.) You may pick up a registration form at any church bulletin board, in the school hallway, or you may register your children on Monday morning before VBS. We still need volunteers to help with our VBS. If you would like to help, we need leaders, assistants, instructors for arts, crafts, and music. We also need snack providers and servers. If you can help in any way, please call Rhonda at 369-9680. Contemporary Worship: The first of our new Contemporary Worship Services will be held this coming Saturday, August 4, at 4:30 PM in the school gymnasium. This service will not replace any of our regularly scheduled worship services, but will be an additional opportunity to participate in worship. THIS SERVICE WILL COUNT TOWARD SCHOOL ATTENDANCE. Annual Planning Meeting: The annual planning breakfast is Saturday, August 11, 2007 at 9:00 a.m. in the cafeteria. The purpose is to plan and schedule activities for September 2007 through August 2008. All Boards and Circles should have a representative in attendance as well as any interested member of the congregation so their yearly planned activities are entered on the calendar, thus eliminating any conflicts when scheduling future church or school events. Please bring a breakfast dish to share. Beverages, plates and utensils will be provided. Youth Group: The next Youth Group meeting will be August 19, from 4-6 PM in the Youth room. Grades 4-12 are all invited and there will be separate activities for the Junior and Senior Groups. Bring a friend and help us build a strong and fun group. The leaders are ready and willing to work to make this the best Youth Group ever! If you have any questions, please call Rhonda McConnell at 369-9680. From the Board of Parish Fellowship: Weekly Fellowship Coffee Hours on Sunday, August 12 will feature blueberry treats; September 9, peach; and October 14, apple. Please be sure to come after the 8:00 a.m. worship service to enjoy these wonderful, nourishing treats followed by spiritual nourishment through Bible study. Mark your calendar now for Sunday, August 26, 2007. Our Annual Outdoor Worship Service begins at 10:00 a.m. with the Family Picnic/Hog Roast at noon in the school gymnasium. Wendell Cooper, the gentleman who roasted pigs for our first hog roast will do the roasting again this year. Each family should bring one or two hot or cold side dishes of generous proportion and/or dessert to share. In addition, each family should provide its own table service. Games for children and adults are being planned with prizes for all the winners. Membership of the various Boards, Trustees and congregation are joining together to make this another enjoyable day of worship, food, fun and fellowship for our congregation. Thanks: I would like the Lord, Pastor Young, Pastor Brauer, and all who said prayers for me and sent cards. The doctor said I was “one sick cookie”. Again, thank you and God bless you. Jo Borg Donations: Ron and Joan Scherer and family made a donation to the Hymnal Fund in loving memory of Curt Scherer whose birth date is August 20.

TO OUR VISITORS: We extend a warm welcome to the assembly of believers gathered to worship with us at St. John’s! First time visitors, please sign the visitors section of the pew pad located at the end of the pew. We want to know who you are! For your convenience, restrooms, first aid, telephone needs and a nursery room are provided in the church basement under the Narthex. God bless your worship! PETITIONS, INTERCESSIONS, AND THANKSGIVING PRAYERS before worship can be found in Lutheran Worship on pages 124-133! SPECIAL NEEDS: Persons unable to climb stairs to the altar are invited to sit in the extra-wide front pews to receive communion or to place a walker. ST. JOHN’S COMMUNION STATEMENT: As a member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, we believe Scripture teaches that the Lord's Supper is a precious gift of God in which Christ gives us His true body and blood (in a miraculous way), together with the bread and wine, for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith. Because the Bible teaches that this sacrament may also be spiritually harmful if misused, St. John’s communes only those instructed in the teachings of the LCMS and our church who have confessed their faith in these teachings. Prompted by the love for God’s Word, love for God’s people, and love for the Bible’s deep concern for doctrinal truth (Romans 16:17), guests who desire to commune are asked to speak with the pastor before service.FELLOWSHIP COFFEE: All are invited to our Fellowship Coffee across the driveway in our School Cafeteria following the 8:00 AM Sunday Service. BIBLE CLASSES: Adult Bible Study follows the Fellowship Coffee in the Cafeteria at 9:30 AM.
