This Week at St. John’s

10th Sunday after Pentecost-August 5, 2007

From Pastor Young:

Welcome! This week's Gospel judges as foolish all our attempts to find meaning in life through the accumulation of material possessions. Jesus says, "Watch out! A man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions." Today we are called to set our minds not on earthly things, but on the things which are above.

"A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT"

Colossians 3:1-11: Christian stewards are people who have been raised with Christ so they can set their hearts and minds on heavenly things rather than on earthly things. We go through life looking up in joy rather than looking down in gloom and sadness, knowing all the while that the best is yet to come.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Sowing Seeds for the Harvest contribution envelopes are available in the Narthex or church office.

Activities Committee Meeting:

Important meeting Monday, August 6, 2007 at 1:15 p.m. in the Ladies Lounge.

Help Needed:

The School Board needs your help! They are painting the gym on August 10, 11 & 12, and need many helping hands. If you are able to help paint and willing to help save the church and school lots of money, please show up in the gym at 8:00 a.m. on any or all of those days. If you have any questions, please call Patty Pavlak at 324-7985. Thank You!

Annual Planning Meeting:

The annual planning breakfast is Saturday, August 11, 2007 at 9:00 a.m. in the cafeteria. The purpose is to plan and schedule activities for

September 2007 through August 2008. All Boards and Circles should have a representative in attendance as well as any interested member of the congregation so their yearly planned activities are entered on the calendar, thus eliminating any conflicts when scheduling future church or school events. Please bring a breakfast dish to share. Beverages, plates and utensils will be provided.

From the Board of Parish Fellowship:

Weekly Fellowship Coffee Hours on Sunday, August 12 will

feature blueberry treats; September 9, peach; and October 14, apple.

Please be sure to come after the 8:00 a.m. worship service to enjoy these wonderful nourishing treats followed by spiritual nourishment through Bible study.

Mark your calendar now for Sunday, August 26, 2007. Our Annual Outdoor Worship Service begins at 10:00 a.m. with the Family Picnic/Hog Roast at noon in the school gymnasium. Wendell Cooper, the gentleman who roasted pigs for our first hog roast will do the roasting again this year. Each family should bring one or two hot or cold side dishes of generous proportion and/or dessert to share. In addition, each family should provide its own table service. Games for children and adults are being planned with prizes for all the winners. Membership of the various Boards, Trustees and congregation are joining together to make this another enjoyable day of worship, food, fun and fellowship for our congregation.

150th Anniversary Notes:

Dear members and friends of St. John’s Lutheran Church,

I read in the LUTHERAN WITNESS that your congregation celebrates its 150th Anniversary in July and I wanted to say congratulations, and may God bless your church and church family for many years to come!

I was baptized, confirmed, and married at St. John’s, and went to seven years of school at St. John’s Lutheran School. I am now a member of Concordia Lutheran Church in San Antonio, Texas.

Congratulations again and God’s richest blessings now and evermore!

Mona Schultz Miller (sister of Richard Schultz and Alyce Compton)

News from Gloria Dei:

Gloria Dei is seeking a preschool teacher and an assistant for 2007-2008. The Gloria Dei Hispanic Mission is hoping to continue the preschool program that has had so much success in bringing children and their families into the church, and teaching children of immigrants the skills needed to do well in English-speaking preschool or kindergarten programs. We are looking for someone who can teach 4 hours a week beginning in September, as well as someone who can assist the teacher. No Spanish or teaching certificate needed, just a willingness to spend time with children and show them letters, numbers, colors, and Christ's love. Experience with children and Sunday School is beneficial. Teaching involves some preparation and will be remunerated; assisting is on a volunteer basis. Please contact Pastor Angon at 219- 916-5171 if you are interested.

Youth Group:

The next Youth Group meeting will be August 19, from 4-6 p.m. in the Youth Room. Grades 4-12 are all invited and there will be separate activities for the Junior and Senior Groups. Bring a friend and help us build a strong and fun group. The leaders are ready and willing to work to make this the best Youth Group ever! If you have any questions, please call Rhonda McConnell at 369-9680.

Sing unto the Lord a new song!

We have been blessed this summer with abundant sunshine, much to celebrate, and the Lord's promise of new beginnings as we continue in ministry. With that, in September, comes the new beginning of Walther League Chorus rehearsals. We practice on Monday evenings at 7:00

p.m. in the school music room, and will begin on September 10th, the week after Labor Day. We welcome you ALL to sing with us. If you used to be in chorus, maybe this is your time to return. If you have never sung with us, try it. You'll like it! We minister to our congregation in regular worship, to the community in our Christmas concert, and to one another as family as we work together. Come as you are - Just bring your voice and your love of the Lord! Sue Rosselli

For your convenience, restrooms, first aid, telephone needs and a staffed nursery for children ages 5 & under are provided in the church basement under the Narthex. God bless your worship!

PETITIONS, INTERCESSIONS, AND THANKSGIVING PRAYERS before worship can be found in Lutheran Worship on pages 124-133!

SPECIAL NEEDS: Persons unable to climb stairs to the altar are invited to sit in the extra-wide front pews to receive communion or to place a walker.

ST. JOHN’S COMMUNION STATEMENT: As a member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, we believe Scripture teaches that the Lord's Supper is a precious gift of God in which Christ gives us His true body and blood (in a miraculous way), together with the bread and wine, for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith. Because the Bible teaches that this sacrament may also be spiritually harmful if misused, St. John’s communes only those instructed in the teachings of the LCMS and our church who have confessed their faith in these teachings. Prompted by the love for God’s Word, love for God’s people, and love for the Bible’s deep concern for doctrinal truth (Romans 16:17), guests who desire to commune are asked to speak with the pastor before service.

FELLOWSHIP COFFEE: All are invited to our Fellowship Coffee across the driveway in our School Cafeteria following the 8:00 AM Sunday Service.

BIBLE CLASSES: Adult Bible Study follows the Fellowship Coffee in the Cafeteria at 9:30 AM.
