This Week at St. John’s 17th Sunday after Pentecost - September 23, 2007 From Pastor Young: Welcome! Jesus shares in the Gospel lesson for today the following words, "You cannot serve both God and money." Jesus wants to make sure that we do not miss the kingdom's goal--to serve only Him in response to His great love. Today we are called to have singleness of purpose in our living. We are to celebrate that God really matters most to us--money and the things of life only seem to matter. Lord, help us serve only You!
ANNOUNCEMENTS "A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT" 1 Timothy 2:1-15: Christian stewards live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. We understand that all we are and have is a gift of God, the true Owner. We practice good stewardship through our prayers, intercessions and generous deeds of kindness. In so doing we make our families, communities and world better because of our stewardship. .(LCMS)
FROM THE BOARD OF PARISH EDUCATION “What is Confession? Confession has two parts. First, that we confess our sins, and second, that we receive Absolution, that is, forgiveness, from the pastor as from God Himself, not doubting, but firmly believing that by it our sins are forgiven before God in heaven” (Luther’s Small Catechism)
Help Needed: The Newspaper Stuffers need your help! Due to illness and with extra work for the holiday season, we are short of people. We need to have 11-12 people each time or we will no longer be able to do this job. Our next work day is Saturday, September 29, from 10:00 AM to about 12:30 PM. We work every other Saturday and the schedule is in the church calendar. Even if you can only help once a month, we need you. For more information contact Karen Piper or Ellen Heidel. Thank you! From the Thrift Shop: The Thrift Shop Staff invites everyone to come in and check out all the new fall merchandise now on display and ready for purchase. From the Board of Parish Fellowship: October 14 is Pastor Appreciation Day. The Board of Parish Fellowship invites the congregation to a reception during Fellowship Coffee Hour after the 8:00 AM. worship service. Come and greet Pastors Young and Brauer. Show your appreciation for their dedicated service to St. John’s Church and School. Baskets will be available for your cards of appreciation. Our “Apple Fest” coincides with this celebration, so there will be apple treats galore. (Anyone wishing to contribute something apple, may do so. Please bring your treat to the kitchen by 7:30 AM.) Thank you. See you all on October 14. Lost & Found: Did you or one of your children misplace a jacket, glasses, or other personal items? There is a card table in the back of the Narthex with many items that were left in Church and Sunday School. If you are missing something, please check there. Donations: Irma Bikneris, Orv and Karen Ulmer, and Roger and Pauletta Schuster made donations of hymnals. Irv and Fran Mellenthin made a donation to the Sunday School. Ray and Verna Fischer and Wilbur Deiters made donations to the Board of Public Relations.

Fall 2007 Progressive Dinner The Board of Parish Fellowship is having its Fall Progressive Dinner Friday, October 12, 2007. We will meet in the Ladies Lounge at 6:00 p.m. for hors d’oeuvres. We have a "new twist" this fall. At 6:45 p.m., we will "journey through the hallway" to the school cafeteria with the host families for the entree for groups of eight people. The host may choose whatever he/she wishes to prepare and bring it to the school cafeteria. The host arranges with other members of the group to provide the appetizer, salad, rolls, butter and dessert. Each host will have a table for his/her guests; and, table service will be provided. Depending on the number of guests, we will either stay in the cafeteria or return to the Ladies Lounge for dessert and more fellowship. This is always an enjoyable evening, and not a "couples only" gathering. Groups will consist of a mixture of old friends with a chance to meet and make new friends. Please complete the following to indicate your willingness to attend and/or host a party of eight in the school cafeteria for the entree. ******************************************************* NAMES OF INDIVIDUALS PLANNING TO ATTEND: _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ TELEPHONE:___________________________________________ WILLING TO HOST: YES______ Please return this form to the church office or place in the offering plate no later than 4:00 p.m. Monday, October 8.

SPECIAL NEEDS: Persons unable to climb stairs to the altar are invited to sit in the extra-wide front pews to receive communion or to place a walker. ST. JOHN’S COMMUNION STATEMENT: As a member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, we believe Scripture teaches that the Lord's Supper is a precious gift of God in which Christ gives us His true body and blood (in a miraculous way), together with the bread and wine, for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith. Because the Bible teaches that this sacrament may also be spiritually harmful if misused, St. John’s communes only those instructed in the teachings of the LCMS and our church who have confessed their faith in these teachings. Prompted by the love for God’s Word, love for God’s people, and love for the Bible’s deep concern for doctrinal truth (Romans 16:17), guests who desire to commune are asked to speak with the pastor before service.FELLOWSHIP COFFEE: All are invited to our Fellowship Coffee across the driveway in our School Cafeteria following the 8:00 AM Sunday Service. BIBLE CLASSES: Adult Bible Study follows the Fellowship Coffee in the Cafeteria at 9:30 AM. SUNDAY SCHOOL: Sunday School begins at 9:25 in the Church Lower Level.
