This Week at St. John’s

18th Sunday after Pentecost-September 30, 2007

From Pastor Young:

Welcome! A special welcome to our visitors and guest! Called by God through our baptism to live in the light of Jesus, the King of kings and Lord of lords, we reject the false security of earthly riches and seek our joy and hope in him. Our liturgy takes shape in our daily lives as we are encouraged to live the example of Jesus and empowered for such Christ-like living by Word and Sacrament. This is indeed the day that the Lord has made!

"A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT"

1 Timothy 6:6-19: In our Epistle reading for today St. Paul warns against the love of money as a root of all evil. This does not mean we should have nothing to do with money, but it does mean that we are to make use of money in a caring and sharing way that brings blessings to others in need and builds treasures for the life to come. (LCMS)

FROM THE BOARD OF PARISH EDUCATION

By His words and works, Jesus provided you with many reasons to know for certain that your sins are forgiven and the gates of heaven are unlocked and open to you. By giving the keys to the church, Christ provides a way for you to hear His words of forgiveness in your own ears, and thereby to know for certain that your sins are forgiven. (Good News, 28)

ANNOUNCEMENTS

From the Thrift Shop: The Thrift Shop potluck is at noon on Monday, October 8, 2007, in the Ladies Lounge.

From the Board of Parish Fellowship: Pastor Appreciation Day is Sunday, October 14, 2007. We will honor our pastors during Fellowship Coffee Hour (also our Apple Fest) after the 8:00 AM worship service in the school cafeteria. We invite you to come and express your appreciation for their tireless dedication to this congregation.

Can Recycling Day: The next can recycling day will be October 13, in conjunction with Market Day. Save your aluminum cans, steel cans and scrap metal and bring them to the school entrance from 9:00-11:00 AM. Please keep each item separate. Future can collection dates are February 23, 2008 and May 24, 2008; these too, are dates coinciding with Market Day. Proceeds will go to the Church Door Replacement Fund.

From the Activities Committee: The Annual Fall Festival will be held Thursday, October 18, 2007, in St. John’s Lutheran School. The Bazaar, featuring handcrafted items and baked goods, will begin at 9:00 AM and the luncheon begins at 11:00 AM, serving hot and cold food prepared by the members of St. John’s. Both events are being held through 1:00 PM Tickets are available from Imogene Dahl, the church office and Commit-tee members at $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for children under 12. Ticket prices at the door will be $6.00 and $2.00 respectively. Questions about tickets may be directed to Imogene at 324-6668.

The Committee has gift baskets featuring Tea, Picnic/Wine, Baby, Bath/Body, Kids’ Activities and Winter. They will be displayed on October 12 at the La Porte Savings Bank, where tickets for the drawing, bazaar tickets and baked goods may be purchased. Baskets will be awarded during the Fall Festival.

Booth space is still available to church organizations, individual members, or outside vendors. For more information on booths, see page 11 of this newsletter or call Karen or Judy.  Any questions regarding the Bazaar, contact Marilyn.

The Activities Committee is in need of food dishes and help in the kitchen for the luncheon. We also need manpower to set up, Wednesday at 2:30 PM, and take down, Thursday at 1:30 PM. If you can help, please call Marilyn Boardman or Marilyn Sawyer.

Computers by Christmas: As many are aware, the school’s computer lab is in dire need of upgrading. A committee has been formed to evaluate the teachers’ and students’ needs, and those needs have determined how the new lab will be equipped. Approximately $15,000 will be raised to establish a new lab which includes computers, printers, and a multimedia station. The goal is to raise the money by Christmas, so that to start the new year, students will be able to use and enjoy a top notch computer lab!

There are many ways to help! All proceeds from the Scrip gift card program for this year, as well as the Carson Community Days coupon book sales will be directed into the Computer Fund. St. John’s PTL has pledged $4,000 to start this campaign. Monetary donations are gratefully accepted! Please make checks payable to “St. John’s Lutheran PTL,” and in the memo section of the check write “Computer Fund.”

Let’s work together to give St. John’s students a Christmas gift that will last for years to come! Please contact Nicole Schuster or Maria Surma for any questions regarding this effort.

More on “Computers by Christmas” campaign: Please help support our “Computers by Christmas” campaign by purchasing a Carson’s Community Day Coupon book. The cost of the book is just $5.00 and includes one $10.00 coupon and eight 20% off coupons. The coupons can be used at Carson’s Community Day on November 10, 2007. This is a great fundraiser for PTL because we get to keep 100% of the sales. All proceeds will go toward the purchase of new computers for the student computer lab in the library. Purchase your coupon book in the school office or contact Jennifer Parrette for more information.

Fund Reports:

Dale Fischer, St. John’s Treasurer, reported that the 150th Anniversary Fund after expenses left a balance of approximately $5,000.00. After discussion, the 150th Anniversary Committee decided to donate:

$1,000.00 to the Indiana District Missions Fund earmarked for start up of new congregations.

$1,000.00 to establish a St. John’s Church Door Replacement Fund. Our church doors are in desperate need of replacement not only for appearance sake but mostly for security reasons. Contributions from members of the congregation given as a memorial or as a gift will be welcome in the coming months.

$3,000.00 (approximate balance) to St. John’s General Fund.

Four hundred fifty (450) new Lutheran Service Book hymnals have been purchased through generous donations by the congregation in commemoration of the 150th Anniversary or as a memorial to a loved one. This phase has provided enough hymnals in the church to use for worship, and an additional 150 hymnals in the future would fill the nave and balcony. Donations on a continuing basis are welcome to fulfill this need. Thanks to everyone who contributed.

Lily Event Report: The final numbers are in and our total income was $16,807.87, expenses were ($7,957.87), profit was $8,850.00.

The committee decided that 10% of the proceeds would go to the Scholarship Program and remainder went to the General Fund.

Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make Lily Event 2007 a success! Thanks to all who attended, we are grateful for your continued support.

We are currently forming committees for Lily Event 2008. If you are interested, there is a sign-up sheet in the hall near the church office.

SPECIAL NEEDS: Persons unable to climb stairs to the altar are invited to sit in the extra-wide front pews to receive communion or to place a walker.

ST. JOHN’S COMMUNION STATEMENT: As a member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, we believe Scripture teaches that the Lord's Supper is a precious gift of God in which Christ gives us His true body and blood (in a miraculous way), together with the bread and wine, for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith. Because the Bible teaches that this sacrament may also be spiritually harmful if misused, St. John’s communes only those instructed in the teachings of the LCMS and our church who have confessed their faith in these teachings. Prompted by the love for God’s Word, love for God’s people, and love for the Bible’s deep concern for doctrinal truth (Romans 16:17), guests who desire to commune are asked to speak with the pastor before service.

FELLOWSHIP COFFEE: All are invited to our Fellowship Coffee across the driveway in our School Cafeteria following the 8:00 AM Sunday Service.

BIBLE CLASSES: Adult Bible Study follows the Fellowship Coffee in the Cafeteria at 9:30 AM.

SUNDAY SCHOOL: Sunday School is at 9:25 in the Church Lower Level.
