This Week at St. John’s 20th Sunday after Pentecost-October 14, 2007 From Pastor Brauer: Welcome to God’s house! Ruth would make a bold profession of faith,
desiring to be with her mother-in-law and worship the God in Israel than stay in
her home country with all the pagan gods. The thankful leper truly knew whom his
Priest was and was cleansed by his faith. St. Paul, in our continuing series
from his last letter he wrote, points to what truly strengthens us, namely the
grace we have in Christ Jesus. How do our confession of faith, our expressions
of thanksgiving, and our trust in God’s grace equip us to be faithful stewards?
It all begins with the unbounded Word of God, that would give us joy and build
us up in God’s kingdom. "A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT" Luke 17:11-19: The story of the ten lepers reminds us to always receive blessings from God with thanksgiving. Someone has said that we may have trouble giving because we have trouble receiving. If we think we have earned everything, that impacts our giving. But when we recognize that all things come from God we acknowledge Him as the Owner and receive and use those things with thanksgiving. (LCMS)
ANNOUNCEMENTS Pastor Appreciation Day is today We will honor our pastors during Fellowship Coffee Hour (also our Apple Fest) after the 8:00 a.m. worship service in the cafeteria. We invite you to come and express your appreciation for their tireless dedication to this congregation. From St. John’s seniors: On Wednesday, October 17, St. John’s Seniors will have their monthly potluck meeting in the school cafeteria at 11:30 AM, and all senior members of St. John’s are cordially invited to attend. Please bring your own table service and a covered dish to share. We hope to see you there! From the Thrift Shop: We have a continuing need of volunteers for our Thrift Shop. Our shifts are from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM or from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Saturday. If you could spare as little as 3 hours per month, or 6 if you’re willing, we would certainly appreciate your help. It can be an interesting time to be out and meeting other people, and at the same time of great benefit to our congregation. Please give it some serious consideration! Call Arlene Hacker at 362-8916 if you are willing to help. We’ll be so happy to have you join us. His Word, Our Joy: His Word, Our Joy meets tonight at 6:30 PM in the Music Room. All are welcome to attend. Family Circle Cookbook: To help commemorate our 150th year, the Family Circle has put together a cookbook of favorite recipes from our church members and school families. They are hardcover books and are just $13.00 a copy. They are now available in the church and school offices, and will also be for sale at the Fall Festival. All proceeds will go toward refurbishing the “Brides Room” in the church and the balance will go to the school Computers by Christmas Fund. From the Activities Committee: The Annual Fall Festival will be held Thursday, October 18, in St. John’s Lutheran School. The Bazaar, featuring handcrafted items and baked goods, will begin at 9:00 AM and the luncheon begins at 11:00 AM, serving hot and cold food prepared by the members of St. John’s. Both events are being held through 1:00 PM Tickets are available from Imogene Dahl, the church office and Committee members at $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for children under 12. Ticket prices at the door will be $6.00 and $2.00 respectively. The Committee has gift baskets featuring Tea, Picnic/Wine, Baby, Bath/Body, Kids’ Activities and Winter. The baskets will be displayed today after the 8:00 a.m. worship service at the Apple Fest and Reception for Pastors Young and Brauer. Tickets for the Theme Baskets and the Bazaar/Luncheon will be available. Baskets will be awarded at the Fall Festival. No need to be present to win. The Activities Committee needs hot and cold food dishes for the luncheon. No desserts, please. We need help in the kitchen for the luncheon. We also need manpower to set up on Wednesday, October 17 at 2:30 p.m. and take down Thursday, October 18 at 1:30 p.m. If you can help in any of these ways, please call Marilyn Boardman or Marilyn Sawyer. The Fall Festival is a major undertaking! Once again, we need St. John’s member support with food donations, help to set up, kitchen and dining room help, diners, take down and vacuum. We have been pre-approved for Thrivent funds. The more profit we make on the luncheon, the more St. John’s will realize from Thrivent. Please support St. John’s Fall Festival. See you October 17 and/or October 18. Thank you. Can Recycling Day: Thanks to all who participated in our recycling day, and remember to keep saving those cans! Future can collection dates are February 23, 2008 and May 24, 2008; these too, are dates coinciding with Market Day. Proceeds will go to the Church Door Replacement Fund. Toys for Appalachian Children: The LLL is again partnering with the Orphan Grain Train and Thrivent to ship toys to poor Appalachian children. Please be a part of this loving project by donating good used or new (no stuffed animals please) toys. Boxes are located in the Church Narthex and by the Church Office. Please bring toys in by November 1. Thanks for considering this opportunity to touch some lives with Christian love. Our School Fundraiser: The students are selling Fanny May candy and a variety of other items to help fund enhanced learning opportunities in music and science. If you have not been contacted by a student, the brochures and order blanks are available in the Narthex. The orders are due by Monday, October 15. You can leave the order blank in the box provided or return it Monday to the school office. No money is due until the items are delivered. Be sure your name and telephone are on the order form so we can contact you when the order arrives. THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT! From Shadetree Mechanics: Our next meeting will be on Friday, October 19, at 6:00 PM. We will meet at the home of Jim Peters, and all are welcome. Update to the Sunday School Schedule: There will be no Sunday School lessons on Sunday, October 21st. However, there will be a special movie shown during this time about Joseph, the son of Jacob, whom we have been studying these past few weeks. Dorothy Spreeman made a donation to the Church Door Fund in loving memory of her husband, Virgil Spreeman. SPECIAL NEEDS: Persons unable to climb stairs to the altar are invited to sit in the extra-wide front pews to receive communion or to place a walker. ST. JOHN’S COMMUNION STATEMENT: As a member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, we believe Scripture teaches that the Lord's Supper is a precious gift of God in which Christ gives us His true body and blood (in a miraculous way), together with the bread and wine, for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith. Because the Bible teaches that this sacrament may also be spiritually harmful if misused, St. John’s communes only those instructed in the teachings of the LCMS and our church who have confessed their faith in these teachings. Prompted by the love for God’s Word, love for God’s people, and love for the Bible’s deep concern for doctrinal truth (Romans 16:17), guests who desire to commune are asked to speak with the pastor before service.FELLOWSHIP COFFEE: All are invited to our Fellowship Coffee across the driveway in our School Cafeteria following the 8:00 AM Sunday Service. BIBLE CLASSES: Adult Bible Study follows the Fellowship Coffee in the Cafeteria at 9:30 AM. SUNDAY SCHOOL: Sunday School begins at 9:25 in the Church Lower Level.
