This Week at St. John’s

Reformation Sunday—October 28, 2007

From Pastor Young:

Good Morning and Welcome to Worship!

Today we observe Reformation Day in our church calendar year. During the age of the Reformation from which our church traces its history, people like Martin Luther took a strong stand on three basic tenets of theology, namely that it is by grace alone that we are saved, it is from Scripture alone that the church receives its doctrine, and that it is by faith alone in God's grace, not by good works, that we are justified before God. Grace alone, Scripture alone, and faith alone became watch words for the Reformation, and from these three themes our worship today is drawn. May Christ draw you closer today!

"A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT"

Romans 3:19-28: The Epistle for Reformation Sunday reminds us Christian stewards that we do not do our stewardship with the motive of winning God’s favor and blessings. Our good works can never save us, but because we are saved we will do good works, including all we do in the name of stewardship. (LCMS)

New Bible Study!: In the spirit of the Reformation, we will study the WORD by fellowshipping around the book of JAMES. James is a foundational epistle to help Christians not only to be “hearers” of the word but to instruct how to be a “doer” of the Word. If you are looking for purpose driven Christian living, you need only come to this Bible study!

Would you like to be in a movie? A son of St. John’s Church and School, Kurt Struss, is producing a movie in the area. “Whispers” is the title of the movie, and it is a suspense/drama based on a 1910 spiritual movement in Goshen, Indiana. He will be shooting three scenes in our sanctuary; the heroine exiting the church through the narthex and down the stairs, the priest praying at the altar for guidance, and the gathered congregation. Shooting will be sometime during the first two weeks of November. If you would like to be a non-paid “extra” in the congregation shots, you will need to sign up and sign a release form. Kurt will be here to sign up members after the 8:00 AM and the 10:45 AM services today.

He needs a full congregation, and is giving us the chance to participate. Our church will receive acknowledgement in the movie credits.

Clean-Up Day: Saturday, November 3, is the next, trustee sponsored, clean-up day. We will need to rake and do general grounds maintenance in preparation for winter. If you can help, we will be working from 8:00 AM-12:00 PM. Thank you!

From the Thrift Shop: We have a continuing need of volunteers for our Thrift Shop. Our shifts are from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM or from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Saturday. If you could spare as little as 3 hours per month, or 6 if you’re willing, we would certainly appreciate your help. It can be an interesting time to be out and meeting other people, and at the same time of great benefit to our congregation. Please give it some serious consideration! Call Arlene Hacker if you are willing to help. We’ll be so happy to have you join us.

Family Circle Cookbook: To help commemorate our 150th year, the Family Circle has put together a cookbook of favorite recipes from our church members and school families. They are hardcover books and are just $13.00 a copy. They are now available in the church and school offices, and will also be for sale after Sunday Services in the narthex.. All proceeds will go toward refurbishing the “Brides Room” in the church and the balance will go to the school Computers by Christmas Fund.

Do You Hear Music in The Air? The time is coming for our Christmas Concert! Mark your calendars for SUNDAY, DECEMBER 2nd at 3:00 PM in the church. The Walther League Chorus, King's Kids, Christus Chorus and our soloists and instrumentalists are preparing a joyful celebration in song for you. You will be filled and surrounded by the love of Jesus as our theme, "Clothed in the Righteousness of Christ" unfolds. This year, you and anyone you bring are all invited to join us for refreshments and fellowship following the concert.

One additional note: We will be decorating the church on Thursday, November 29th from 4:30 until we finish. All helping hands are appreciated, as well as some strong arms and backs for our angels. Thank you! Sue Rosselli

Toys for Appalachian Children: The LLL is again partnering with the Orphan Grain Train and Thrivent to ship toys to Appalachian children. Please be a part of this loving project by donating good used or new toys. Boxes are located in the Church Narthex and by the Church Office. Please bring toys in by November 1. Thanks for considering this opportunity to touch some lives with Christian love.

From the Board of Parish Fellowship: Many thanks to all who brought apple treats for Pastor Appreciation Day, October 14. It was a nice reception. Plan to come to our Pumpkin Fest Fellowship Coffee November 11 and the Christmas Cookie Fest December 9, 2007.

Thanks to all who attended our Progressive Dinner October 12. Believe it or not, the cafeteria was transformed into an "elegant fine- dining atmosphere," thanks to Marilyn Boardman. The food was excellent and fellowship was enjoyed by all. See you at the Spring Dinner.

From the Activities Committee: The Fall Festival was a huge success. We extend thanks to all who contributed hot, cold foods and desserts; and, to all who helped set up, decorate, serve, clean up and tear down.

Thanks to the outside vendors, the church organizations and individuals who had booths to sell their crafts, flowers and baked goods. We hope you had a successful day also.

We earned approximately $1800 and will receive an additional $800 from Thrivent. Some of the money will go toward new banquet tables.

Voter’s Meeting News:

The next Voter’s Meeting will be on Wednesday, November 7, at 7:00 PM, in the school cafeteria. Please try to attend this meeting.

The council will present, for vote, the 2008 Budget/Spending Plan and propose to keep the Saturday church service starting time at 6:00 PM. Please extend your right and privilege, as a voting member, to come and make your vote count!

Congratulations to Pastor Brauer: Pastor Brauer was honored at the Pastor’s Conference for his fifth year as an Ordained Minister with the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Congratulations to you, Pastor Brauer and God's Blessings to you and your family.

All Saints’ Day Service: This Thursday, November 1, at 7:00 PM, we will have a special Worship Service with Holy Communion, in celebration of All Saints’ Day

Donations: John and Alyce Compton made a donation for the purchase of new Hymnals.

Doris Huckstead made donations to the Church Door Fund and to the Computers by Christmas Fund.

Jimmie and Arlene Hacker made a donation to the Church Door Fund.

Margaret Boardman made a donation to the Church Door Fund.

The family of Dorothy Moellman invites you, her church friends and family, to an Open House in honor of her 80th birthday. The Open House will be held from noon to 3:00 PM, Sunday, November 4, in the school cafeteria.

SPECIAL NEEDS: Persons unable to climb stairs to the altar are invited to sit in the extra-wide front pews to receive communion or to place a walker.

ST. JOHN’S COMMUNION STATEMENT: As a member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, we believe Scripture teaches that the Lord's Supper is a precious gift of God in which Christ gives us His true body and blood (in a miraculous way), together with the bread and wine, for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith. Because the Bible teaches that this sacrament may also be spiritually harmful if misused, St. John’s communes only those instructed in the teachings of the LCMS and our church who have confessed their faith in these teachings. Prompted by the love for God’s Word, love for God’s people, and love for the Bible’s deep concern for doctrinal truth (Romans 16:17), guests who desire to commune are asked to speak with the pastor before service.

FELLOWSHIP COFFEE: All are invited to our Fellowship Coffee across the driveway in our School Cafeteria following the 8:00 AM Sunday Service.

BIBLE CLASSES: Adult Bible Study follows the Fellowship Coffee in the Cafeteria at 9:30 AM.

SUNDAY SCHOOL: Sunday School begins at 9:25 in the Church Lower Level.

DISCIPLESHIP CLASSES: Classes begin at 9:30 AM in the Ladies Lounge.
