This Week at St. John’s 24th Sunday after Pentecost-November 11, 2007 From Pastor Young: Welcome! God's Word today leads us to reflect on the glories of this world and the next. While we have no description of heaven, we do have an appropriate focus for our worship while we are here on earth: the cross of Jesus. Today we are invited to worship God in the expected--the glories of his creation, and in the unexpected--the glory of the cross of Christ.
"A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT" 2 Thessalonians 2:1-8, 13-17: As we live out our lives as God’s stewards we are reminded that our Heavenly Father and Lord Jesus Christ love us and strengthen and encourage us for every good deed and word. What we do as God’s stewards really does make a difference! (LCMS)
ANNOUNCEMENTS From the Board of Parish Fellowship: Plan to come to our Pumpkin Fest Fellowship Coffee today, and the Christmas Cookie Fest December 9, 2007. School Book Fair: The annual School Book Fair begins today (Sunday) in the school cafeteria. Books will be available for purchase after both services; 9-10 AM and 12-1 PM. It will also continue Monday and Tuesday from 7:30 AM-3:30 PM and Wednesday and Thursday from 7:30-10:30 AM. Grandparents and parents, these books make great Christmas presents, and the classroom libraries receive many books as the benefit of this sale. His Word, Our Joy: His Word, Our Joy meets tonight at 6:30 PM in the Music Room. All are welcome to attend. Attention Altar Guild: Please remember that Thursday, November 15, is our next cleaning day. Please be in the church at 8:00 AM. Anyone else willing to help is welcome too. From the Thrift Shop: We have a continuing need of volunteers for our Thrift Shop. Our shifts are from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM or from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Saturday. If you could spare as little as 3 hours per month, or 6 if you’re willing, we would certainly appreciate your help. It can be an interesting time to be out and meeting other people, and at the same time of great benefit to our congregation. Please give it some serious consideration! Call Arlene Hacker if you are willing to help. We’ll be so happy to have you join us. Fish Fry: The School Board and the PTL, along with numerous volunteers, are planning our next Fish Fry for Friday, November 30. We are looking for sponsors to offset the cost, and our goal is as follows: receive 4 free dinner tickets. If you can help with a donation or services, please contact Linda in the Church Office or Cindy in the School Office. We will also need pies for dessert. Anyone wishing to donate pies should have them at the school gymnasium by 4 p.m. the day of the fish fry. If you have any questions, please call Annette Williams. Thank you in advance for your support! Tickets are available in both offices and from School Board and PTL members. They are $7.50 for adults ($8.00 at the door) and $4.50 for children. Proceeds will be divided between the School Computers by Christmas Fund and the Church Door Fund. Family Circle Cookbook: To help commemorate our 150th year, the Family Circle has put together a cookbook of favorite recipes from our church members and school families. They are hardcover books and are just $13.00 a copy. They are now available in the church and school offices. All proceeds will go toward refurbishing the “Brides Room” in the church and the balance will go to the school Computers by Christmas Fund. From the Evening Circle: It’s that time of year again. Evening Circle has pecans — halves, pieces, chocolate covered and caramel clusters for sale. The cost is $7.00 per bag. Please contact Deana Murray, Jan Malstaff, or any other Evening Circle member. Do You Hear Music in The Air? The time is coming for our Christmas Concert! Mark your calendars for SUNDAY, DECEMBER 2nd at 3:00 PM in the church. The Walther League Chorus, King's Kids, Christus Chorus and our soloists and instrumentalists are preparing a joyful celebration in song for you. You will be filled and surrounded by the love of Jesus as our theme, "Clothed in the Righteousness of Christ" unfolds. This year, you and anyone you bring are all invited to join us for refreshments and fellowship following the concert. There are no tickets to purchase, the concert is free! One additional note: We will be decorating the church on Thursday, November 29th from 4:30 until we finish. All helping hands are appreciated, as well as some strong arms and backs for our angels. Thank you! -Sue Rosselli Computers by Christmas: As many are aware, the school’s computer lab is in dire need of upgrading. A committee has been formed to evaluate the teachers’ and students’ needs, and those needs have determined how the new lab will be equipped. Approximately $15,000 will be raised to establish a new lab which includes computers, printers, and a multimedia station. The goal is to raise the money by Christmas, so that to start the new year, students will be able to use a top notch computer lab! There are many ways to help! All proceeds from the Scrip gift card program for this year will be directed into the Computer Fund. St. John’s PTL has pledged $4,000 to start this campaign. Monetary donations are gratefully accepted! Please make checks payable to “St. John’s Lutheran PTL,” and in the memo section write “Computer Fund.” Let’s work together to give St. John’s students a Christmas gift that will last for years to come! Please contact Nicole Schuster or Maria Surma for any questions regarding this effort. Donations: The PTL thanks Jeanette Darby, Marie Huge and Zachary and Emma Husmann for their donations to the School Computer Fund. Barry and Sherry Siddall made a donation to the Walther League Chorus in loving memory of Martin and Eleonora Vollrath. Dorothy V. Levandoski made a donation to the Door Fund in loving memory of her husband, Ed, whose birth date was November 9.

SPECIAL NEEDS: Persons unable to climb stairs to the altar are invited to sit in the extra-wide front pews to receive communion or to place a walker. ST. JOHN’S COMMUNION STATEMENT: As a member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, we believe Scripture teaches that the Lord's Supper is a precious gift of God in which Christ gives us His true body and blood (in a miraculous way), together with the bread and wine, for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith. Because the Bible teaches that this sacrament may also be spiritually harmful if misused, St. John’s communes only those instructed in the teachings of the LCMS and our church who have confessed their faith in these teachings. Prompted by the love for God’s Word, love for God’s people, and love for the Bible’s deep concern for doctrinal truth (Romans 16:17), guests who desire to commune are asked to speak with the pastor before service.FELLOWSHIP COFFEE: All are invited to our Fellowship Coffee across the driveway in our School Cafeteria following the 8:00 AM Sunday Service. BIBLE CLASSES: Adult Bible Study follows the Fellowship Coffee in the Cafeteria at 9:30 AM. SUNDAY SCHOOL: Sunday School begins at 9:25 in the Church Lower Level.
