This Week at St. John’s 25th Sunday after Pentecost - November 18, 2007 From Pastor Young: Welcome! To a world that believes life would go on forever, comes a sobering word of judgment (in today’s Old Testament and Gospel readings): The end is near! It is a word of terror for those who live apart from God. But for God’s faithful, it is a word of healing. As we wait (in the Epistle), we must not “grow weary in doing good.”
"A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT" 2 Thessalonians 3:6-13: The Epistle reading for today reminds us of the truth that if anyone will not work, he shall not eat. We live out our stewardship responsibly and in so doing make use of our time and resources in a way that helps our neighbor and brings praise and glory to God. (LCMS)
ANNOUNCEMENTS Church Christmas Decorations: We will be decorating the church on Thursday, November 29 from 4:30 until we finish. All helping hands are appreciated, as well as some strong arms and backs for our angels. Thank you! Sue Rosselli Fish Fry: The School Board and the PTL, along with numerous volunteers, are planning our next Fish Fry for Friday, November 30. We are looking for sponsors to offset the cost, and our goal is as follows: receive 4 free dinner tickets. If you can help with a donation or services, please contact Linda in the Church Office or Cindy in the School Office. We will also need pies for dessert. Anyone wishing to donate pies should have them at the school gymnasium by 4 p.m. the day of the fish fry. If you have any questions, please call Annette Williams. Thank you in advance for your support! Tickets are available in both offices and from School Board and PTL members. They are $7.50 for adults ($8.00 at the door) and $4.50 for children. Proceeds will be divided between the School Computers by Christmas Fund and the Church Door Fund. Not only for this fundraiser, but for all church and school fundraising functions, volunteers must purchase and turn in a fish fry ticket for their meal. Thank you. Do You Hear Music in The Air? The time is coming for our Christmas Concert! Mark your calendars for SUNDAY, DECEMBER 2, at 3:00 PM in the church. The Walther League Chorus, King's Kids, Christus Chorus and our soloists and instrumentalists are preparing a joyful celebration in song for you. You will be filled and surrounded by the love of Jesus as our theme, "Clothed in the Righteousness of Christ" unfolds. This year, you and anyone you bring are all invited to join us for a reception in the school cafeteria for refreshments and fellowship following the concert. There are no tickets to purchase, the concert is free! From St. John’s Seniors: There will be no meeting of St. John’s Seniors in November but a Christmas Party will be held at Brentwood Assisted Living on December 19 at 1:30 p.m.. Those planning to attend must have their reservations, payment of $10.00 and meat selection of turkey or beef made to Eunice Wright at 362-7947 no later than December 1. Poinsettias: It is time for us to start asking for donations for the poinsettias. We do appreciate all your help in the past and pray that you will be so generous again this year. The cost per poinsettia is $12.00 this year. You can give your donation to the Church Office, Marilyn Boardman, Mary Jo Uebele, or Sherrill Lee. Please let us know at that time if you will be picking up your poinsettia. The poinsettias will be taken down after the 2nd service on the Sunday, December 30. If you are going to take your poinsettia, please be there to pick it up at that time. If not for yourself, maybe you know someone who would really appreciate a flower and a visit from you. Thank you again for your donation to the flower fund. From the Altar Guild: Plan to attend the Altar Guild meeting after the Wednesday Advent Worship Service December 5, 2007 in church. From the Board of Parish Fellowship: Plan to come to our Christmas Cookie Fest Fellowship Coffee December 9, 2007. Computers by Christmas Update: Computers by Christmas is in sight! SPECIAL NEEDS: Persons unable to climb stairs to the altar are invited to sit in the extra-wide front pews to receive communion or to place a walker. ST. JOHN’S COMMUNION STATEMENT: As a member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, we believe Scripture teaches that the Lord's Supper is a precious gift of God in which Christ gives us His true body and blood (in a miraculous way), together with the bread and wine, for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith. Because the Bible teaches that this sacrament may also be spiritually harmful if misused, St. John’s communes only those instructed in the teachings of the LCMS and our church who have confessed their faith in these teachings. Prompted by the love for God’s Word, love for God’s people, and love for the Bible’s deep concern for doctrinal truth (Romans 16:17), guests who desire to commune are asked to speak with the pastor before service.FELLOWSHIP COFFEE: All are invited to our Fellowship Coffee across the driveway in our School Cafeteria following the 8:00 AM Sunday Service. BIBLE CLASSES: Adult Bible Study follows the Fellowship Coffee in the Cafeteria at 9:30 AM. SUNDAY SCHOOL: Sunday School begins at 9:25 in the Church Lower Level.
