This Week at St. John’s The Baptism of Our Lord-January 13, 2008 From Pastor Brauer: Welcome! Baptism—God immerses us, one-by-one, into the death and life of Jesus Christ. Baptism—God, in advance of the Last Day, utters His final verdict upon us: Forgiven—not guilty! Baptism—God incorporates us into the body of Christ and, therefore, into one another. Today we echo the call of John the Baptizer to repent and believe as we prepare for our Lord's coming. Thus we prepare our hearts for our God who comes with comfort and tenderness, having paid for our sins. Here is your God! Look what He gives YOU in your baptism! God bless your celebration! "A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT" Romans 6:1-4: Who are God’s modern-day wise stewards? They are the baptized people of God who live lives dedicated to God and use their money, time and other gifts for God’s purposes. (LCMS) FROM THE BOARD OF SOCIAL MINISTRY Happiness is.....paying bills, putting a dollar in savings and giving a dollar away. If your financial happiness is suffering from holiday gift giving be sure to attend our seminar on January 26th in the Ladies Lounge from 10:00 - Noon. You will be wiser and happier. No cost - no obligation. Just call the Church Office at 219-362-3726 by January 21st to RSVP.
ANNOUNCEMENTS From Sunday School: Sunday School resumes TODAY, January 13th at 9:30 in the church basement. We hope to see you there! Also, I would like to thank the following people for their continued support of Sunday School: Pastor Brauer, Maria Surma (PS/PK teacher), Lesa Hill (Kindergarten teacher), Chris Fronk (3rd grade & up teacher), part-time teachers and helpers, Dana Alexander for donating crafts, and especially the parents. Without your support, we would not be able to bring the word of God to so many kids. In 2007, the Sunday School kids donated over 50 items to the St. John's food pantry and collected nearly $100, which has been donated to the St. John's school computer fund. We are still in need of some part time teachers! If you would like to get involved in the Christian education of our youngsters, please don't hesitate to contact me (Tracy Fronk). His Word, Our Joy: His Word, Our Joy will meet today, Sunday, January 13, in the music room at 6:30 PM. Everyone is invited to join this time of study, singing and fellowship. From the Board of Parish Fellowship: Today features a “Surprise” at Fellowship Coffee. You must attend to find out what the secret ingredient is in every treat! After coffee, join us in Bible Study as we begin a new study on the book of Acts. The “Every Member Sunday” potluck is Sunday, January 27, 2008. A new feature is planned — a hymn fest, singing the music of Paul Gerhardt, at approximately 1:30 p.m. in the Chapel. Plan to worship at 10:45 a.m., attend the potluck in the gym and the hymn fest in the Chapel. Your ticket to get in is bring a hot or cold dish of generous proportions to share. Bring table service for your family. Beverages will be provided. As usual, you may bring your dishes to the school kitchen before the worship service. Do not bring any serving utensils. Please pick up your dishes from the serving tables as you leave. From St. John’s Seniors: The first meeting of the new year for St. John’s Seniors will begin with a potluck dinner at 11:30 AM on January 16 in the school cafeteria, and all senior members of St. John’s are cordially invited to attend. Please bring your own table service and a covered dish to share. To help us get back into shape after the holidays, Anita Beaudoin of La Porte Hospital will be on hand to teach us “Zumba” dancing! From the School Board: The School Board would like to thank the numerous volunteers, people who donated, and those who attended the Fish Fry in November. A special thank you to Dawn and Jim Crum and Paul Tibbs who helped lead all the efforts. It was a huge success with over $3,000 raised. The money will be distributed between the Computer Fund and the Door Fund. Again, thank you. From the Finance Committee: Year-end statements for 2007 are now available in the Narthex. Please pick them up as soon as possible to check for any possible errors. The remainder of the 2008 contribution envelopes are available in the Narthex also. Newsletter: Any board or organization wishing to place an article or an announcement in the February Newsletter, needs to have them to the church office by 8:00 AM, Friday, January 18. Dishes: There are many unclaimed dishes in the Ladies Lounge. If you have provided food for a church function recently, please check to see if you have picked up your empty dish! Thank you. Market Day: Our next Market Day is January 26 from 9:30-10:30 AM in the school cafeteria. Orders need to be in the Market Day mailbox by Friday, January 18. Internet orders should be done by noon on Wednesday, January 23. If you have questions, contact Heather Alexander at 325-9653, Teresa Sickmiller, or Jen Alexander. Thank you for helping our school with this fundraiser! 2008 Lily Event: Please think about being a volunteer for next year’s Lily Event. The sign up sheet and job descriptions are on the bulletin board across from the church office. We need your help! From the Willing Servants: The Willing Servants (Funeral Dinner Committee) would like to thank all the ladies who donated either food or help this past year. Without your help we could not function at this “labor of love”. Due to a number of ladies having to withdraw from our calling list, we are looking for new participants for occasional donations of food or assistance. If interested, call either Jo Ann Borg or Louise Mellenthin. Thank you! Donations: Circle 4 made a donation to the Altar Guild Flower Fund. The Activities Committee made a $1602.25 donation to the Church Door Fund with money raised at the Fall Festival. The Newspaper Stuffers made donations to the Altar Guild, Missions, VBS and the Easter Breakfast. Arlene and Jim Hacker made a donation to the Church Door Fund in loving memory of Elmer Roempagel, father, whose birth date is January 11. First time visitors, please sign the visitors section of the pew pad located at the end of the pew. We want to know who you are! For your convenience, restrooms, first aid, telephone needs and a nursery room for children ages 5 & under are provided in the church basement under the Narthex. God bless your worship! PETITIONS, INTERCESSIONS, AND THANKSGIVING PRAYERS before worship can be found in Lutheran Service Book, inside front cover and beginning on page 305. SPECIAL NEEDS: Persons unable to climb stairs to the altar are invited to sit in the extra-wide front pews to receive communion or to place a walker. ST. JOHN’S COMMUNION STATEMENT: As a member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, we believe Scripture teaches that the Lord's Supper is a precious gift of God in which Christ gives us His true body and blood (in a miraculous way), together with the bread and wine, for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith. Because the Bible teaches that this sacrament may also be spiritually harmful if misused, St. John’s communes only those instructed in the teachings of the LCMS and our church who have confessed their faith in these teachings. Prompted by the love for God’s Word, love for God’s people, and love for the Bible’s deep concern for doctrinal truth (Romans 16:17), guests who desire to commune are asked to speak with the pastor before service.FELLOWSHIP COFFEE: All are invited to our Fellowship Coffee across the driveway in our School Cafeteria following the 8:00 AM Sunday Service. BIBLE CLASSES: Adult Bible Study follows the Fellowship Coffee in the Cafeteria at 9:30 AM. SUNDAY SCHOOL: Sunday School begins at 9:30 in the Church Lower Level.
