This Week at St. John’s 2nd Sunday in Lent-February 17, 2008 From Pastor Young: Christ be with you!! Let us gladly die with Jesus. Since by death He conquered death, He will free us from destruction, Give to us immortal breath. Let us mortify all passion that would lead us into sin; Then by grace we all may win Untold fruits of His creation. Jesus, unto You I die, there to live with You on high. -- Sigismund von Birken [St. 3: LSB 685)
ANNOUNCEMENTS Romans 4:1-8; 13-17: Abraham was not saved by his good works but by his faith in the promises of God. That faith enabled him to manage all of life and life’s resources for God’s purposes. May God grant that that we become the same kind of faithful and generous stewards.
Note from Sunday School: This weekend the Sunday School will be showing the Jesus movie. We will not have a regular lesson. Parents are invited to join their children to watch this excellent film. Regular lessons will resume next weekend. Parish Fellowship-Upcoming Events: The Lenten Soup Suppers have begun, and will continue each Wednesday through March 12, 2008, at 5:30 p.m.; we’ll serve until 6:15 p.m. We will not chase you out at 6:15, but we need time to clean up after supper so we can go to the worship services too. This leaves you time for fellowship. As usual there will be three choices of soup to choose from, along with breads, crackers, fruit, dessert and beverages. This week, we’ll have split pea with ham, broccoli with cheese and chili. A freewill offering will be accepted.. See you all soon. This year we will also be blessed by offerings from Kat Peters with Hispanic singers from Gloria Dei, some worship dancers, and an exciting group of young people, the Michigan City Soul Steppers, who combine music, Scripture and movement. Our own Walther League Chorus and some of our students will sing as well, and we will all have opportunity to sing and pray together. Refreshments and fellowship will follow in the cafeteria. Bring some friends, meet some friends! From the Altar Guild: The next regular meeting will be March 5, immediately following the Lenten Service. We are desperately in need of additional members. If anyone is interested, please stay for our meeting. Discipleship Class: Prospects for our next Discipleship class are
being gathered for a class to begin sometime in March. If you or someone you
know who would be interested in studying the basics of Christian doctrine and
would like to become a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, then please call
the church office and be included on the list. We will contact those who sign up
to inform when and where class will begin and meet. Help Needed: We have a member, living on the west side of town, who needs a ride to church services at 10:45 AM. SPECIAL NEEDS: Persons unable to climb stairs to the altar are invited to sit in the extra-wide front pews to receive communion or to place a walker. ST. JOHN’S COMMUNION STATEMENT: As a member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, we believe Scripture teaches that the Lord's Supper is a precious gift of God in which Christ gives us His true body and blood (in a miraculous way), together with the bread and wine, for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith. Because the Bible teaches that this sacrament may also be spiritually harmful if misused, St. John’s communes only those instructed in the teachings of the LCMS and our church who have confessed their faith in these teachings. Prompted by the love for God’s Word, love for God’s people, and love for the Bible’s deep concern for doctrinal truth (Romans 16:17), guests who desire to commune are asked to speak with the pastor before service.FELLOWSHIP COFFEE: All are invited to our Fellowship Coffee across the driveway in our School Cafeteria following the 8:00 AM Sunday Service. BIBLE CLASSES: Adult Bible Study follows the Fellowship Coffee in the Cafeteria at 9:30 AM. SUNDAY SCHOOL: Sunday School begins at 9:30 in the Church Lower Level.
