This Week at St. John’s
Palm Sunday - March 16, 2008

From Pastor Brauer:

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” You have come to God’s house of worship today to be blessed through His Word. We come on this Palm Sunday to joyfully receive Jesus, our Redeemer-King. We praise the One who has come to save us. But as we leave, we ponder His Passion for us, hearing again the sufferings that Jesus endured for us. We begin Calvary’s mournful mountain climb to adore what God’s Only Son did for us and our salvation. Each day, from now to eternity, may God awaken your ears to hear as one who is taught. May He give you a tongue to confess His holy name as you confess “Jesus Christ is MY Lord” to the glory of God the Father.

"A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT"

Philippians 2:5-11: Jesus, the almighty and eternal Son of God, emptied Himself and took on the form of a servant to do for us what we could never do for ourselves. What an encouragement for us to live as God’s servants who do the right things for the right reasons and make this world a better place because we are here. (LCMS)

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Dishes: There are unclaimed dishes in the Ladies Lounge. If you have provided food for a church function recently, please see if you have picked up your empty dish! Please pick them up by 4:00 PM on March 20. The remaining dishes will be donated to the Thrift Shop for resale.

SSAC is Coming! It is an organization within our Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, designed to ‘strengthen schools and churches.’ The weekend of March 29-April 1 will see us hosting this team as they make interviews, take observations, and worship with us. They will assess our strengths and provide a plan to make improvements for our school and church operations. Please welcome these visitors!

From St. John’s Seniors: Senior members of St. John’s will have the opportunity to meet the chaperones and a few German Students in the Student Exchange group between La Porte High School and the high school in Haltern, Germany when St. John’s Seniors have their meeting on March 19. They will be brought to us by local LPHS German teacher and fellow member of St. John’s, Trudy Roule. The meeting will begin with a potluck dinner at 11:30 AM in the school cafeteria, and members are asked to bring their own table service and a covered dish to share.

Market Day News: Please place an order for Market Day this month!  We have the opportunity to get a lot of money if everyone could purchase 1 to 3 items on pages 2 & 3. (The brunch items). They look delicious and arrive just in time for Easter. If you order 3 items you will receive a free spatula. Internet orders, at www.marketday.com, are due no later than Wednesday March 19 by 12:00 noon.

I want to thank you for ordering in the past as well. Market Day really does help our school's Athletic Fund, and General School Fund to purchase very necessary items each month. Also spread the word to your friends and family as new customers are always appreciated. Thanks so much, Heather Alexander

From Sunday School: All children are invited to hear the good news of Easter and enjoy an Easter egg hunt on Saturday, March 22 at 10:00 AM. Please meet in the church basement seated in the Sunday school pews (no head starts). This is Market Day pick-up, so parents can pick-up their Easter orders while the kids pick-up eggs! Bring a friend to share the joy! Please remember that there will be no Sunday School on Easter Sunday.

Easter Lilies: It isn’t too late to make a donation toward Easter Lilies. The cost per lily is $12.00. You can make your donation to the Church Office, Marilyn Boardman, Mary Jo Uebele, or Sherrill Lee. Please let us know at that time if you will be picking up your lily. The lilies will be taken down after the 2nd service on the Sunday following Easter – (March 30th.) If you are going to take your lily, please be there to pick it up at that time. Thank you again for your donations to the flower fund.

For Your Easter Basket: Need something special for that Easter Basket? The Evening Circle still has Pecan Carmel Clusters. Call Jan Malstaff or Deana Murray.

From Shadetree Mechanics: Shadetree is going to start meeting again to work on spring projects.  We will meet the first and third Thursday of the month, beginning on April 3 at 7:00 PM. If you have a project for us to work on, please call Jim Peters or Luke Vandercar. Anyone who would like to join us is welcome too! For more details, please call Jim or Luke.

Gift Certificate Information: Thanks to all who are purchasing Al’s certificates and Kroger cards to support our church. Just a note: The name “Barney’s” on Al’s certificates refers to their store in New Buffalo. Our certificates are not redeemable at the I Street grocery store by the same name which is a privately owned business. We hope this clears up any confusion. Certificates and cards are available the 1st and 2nd Sundays at 9AM in the school hallway, and almost every Sunday in the narthex before the 2nd service.

Fish Fry: Our first fish fry of the year is being sponsored by the congregation, directed by Dawn Crum. She along with numerous volunteers are planning the fish fry, Friday, April 25 between 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. We are looking for sponsors to offset the cost, and our goal is as follows:

15 sponsors who donate $100.00 each for a box of fish, will receive

4 free dinner tickets.

15 sponsors who donate $50.00 each to help provide potatoes, baked beans, beverages, cooking oil and miscellaneous items, will receive

2 free dinner tickets.

If you can help with a donation or services, please contact Linda in the Church Office at 362-3726 or Cindy in the School Office at 362-6692.

We will also need pies for dessert. Anyone wishing to donate pies should have them at the school gymnasium by 4 p.m. the day of the fish fry. Please call Annette Williams with any questions. Thank you in advance for your support!

Tickets are available in both offices and from Board members. If you have any questions, please call Imogene Dahl. Tickets are $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for children under 12. Proceeds will be divided between the Church Door Fund and Roof Repair Fund. For this reason, all volunteers must purchase and turn in a fish fry ticket for their meal.

Lily Event news: We are looking for auction items for this year’s Lily Event. Anyone wishing to donate auction items or give a monetary donation, please contact Jessica Watson.

From the Thrift Shop: Our Thrift Shop is in need of workers and a treasurer, as well as men to open and close the building and take on a few extra duties. Our Thrift Shop has been an asset to the community and our church for nearly 38 years, and has had many dedicated workers making it successful. If you can volunteer three hours a week, take the treasurer’s position, or open and close for a week or two, please contact Mary Jo Uebele or Ron or Marilyn Boardman. We will be happy to explain our needs and train you. Thank you for your consideration. Mary Jo

Spring 2008—Progressive Dinner/PTL Spring Dance

The Board of Parish Fellowship is having its Spring Progressive Dinner Friday, April 18, 2008; and, it coincides with the PTL Spring Dance.

Participating adults will meet in the Ladies Lounge at 6:00 p.m. for hors d’oeuvres.

At 6:45 p.m., we and/or parents of children attending the dance will "journey through the hallway" to the school cafeteria or go to the homes of host families for the entree for groups of eight people. The host may choose whatever he/she wishes to prepare and bring it to the school cafeteria or serve it at home. The host arranges with other members of the group to provide the appetizer, salad, rolls, butter and dessert. Each host entertaining in the school cafeteria will have a table for his/her guests; and, table service will be provided.

Depending on the number of guests, we will either stay in the cafeteria or go to the Clarence Spear home for dessert and more fellowship.

This is always an enjoyable evening, and not a "couples only" gathering. The Board will group together a mixture of old friends with a chance to meet and make new friends. Families with pre-school aged children are encouraged to attend even though the children cannot attend the dance. Evening care will be provided by competent young ladies.

Please complete the following to indicate your willingness to attend and/or host a party of eight in the school cafeteria or in your home for the entree.

The Choral Anthem and Processional Hymn

(Children with palm branches may join the procession and then return to their seats at the end of the hymn.)

“Hosanna to the King!”—arr. Lloyd Larson

Hosanna, loud hosanna, the little children sang;

Through pillared court and temple the lovely anthem rang;

To Jesus who had blessed them close folded to His breast,

The children sang their praises, the simplest and the best.

From Olivet they followed ‘mid and exultant crowd,

The victor palm branch waving, and chanting clear and loud;

The Lord of earth and heaven rode on in lowly state,

Nor scorned the little children should on His bidding wait.

(Short musical interlude)

“Hosanna in the highest!” That ancient song we sing,

For Christ is our Redeemer, the Lord of heaven, our King.

O may we ever praise Him with heart and life and voice,

And in His blissful presence eternally rejoice.

The Collect of the Day

The Psalmody: Psalm 118:1-20

The Old Testament Reading: Isaiah 50:4-9a

C: Therefore He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance.

P: He sent redemption to His people;

C: He has commanded His covenant forever.

The Choral Anthem: “Hosanna, Hosanna We Sing”—Borchardt/Pethel
