This Week at St. John’s

The Baptism of Our Lord - January 13, 2008

(Edited to remove personal phone numbers, email addresses and other personal information not for online use)

From Pastor Brauer: “The Lord is my Shepherd…” Only the faithful can make that claim. In baptismal grace we are the sheep of the Good Shepherd’s hand. We are the people in His pasture, that is, in the kingdom of grace, the Holy Christian Church on earth. It is in that green pasture of His Holy Word where we graze. And it is by the Good Shepherd’s protection that we are safe from the enemies of our faith. Jesus, the Door of the Sheep, allows passage to those who would truly tend and feed His sheep and lambs. In true repentance we acknowledge our straying from the fold of those who continue steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine, fellowship, communion, and prayers. Jesus, the Good Shepherd, by His unction grace, that is, by His anointing grace, fills our life abundantly with His life which He laid down for us.

"A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT"

1 Peter 2:19-25: Jesus was God’s Chief Steward in doing perfectly the will of His Father. But as He did so, He endured extreme suffering. We will never have to endure the same suffering that Jesus experienced but sometimes we may be considered foolish for using a generous portion of our time, talents and money for the Lord’s work. In the eyes of unbelievers that is a waste of resources, but in the eyes of us Christians that is good stewardship!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Fellowship Coffee: Today’s Fellowship Coffee will feature a “Pineapple Fest.” Come enjoy a pineapple treat with coffee, juice and water. Children always find a treat they like too. Enjoy this fellowship time with your brothers and sisters in Christ before Bible study and Sunday School. A donation of $2 .00 per family is welcome to defray the cost of beverages, supplies and the family picnic/hog roast.

His Word, Our Joy: His Word, Our Joy will meet in the music room tonight at 6:30. Come join us as we sing contemporary songs, pray for our friends, and have a craft for the children.

From St. John’s Seniors: The monthly potluck meeting of St. John’s Seniors will be held on Wednesday, April 16 at 11:30 in the school cafeteria, and all senior members of St. John’s are cordially invited to attend.

Please bring your own table service and a covered dish to share. Our speaker will be Julie Small Krcilek, Landscape Designer and owner of Small’s Landscape, Inc. She will share many gardening and landscaping tips for our spring planting, and also tell about the variety of gifts and services available at their business. Why don’t you plan to attend!

LILY Event news: We are looking for auction items for this year’s LILY Event. Please check the bulletin board across from the church office if you would like to sponsor a basket, co-sponsor a basket, or donate an item or two. If you have any questions, please contact Jesica Watson at 369-8198.

This year the LILY Event will be May 9, from 6:00 PM-12:00 AM at the Silver Palace. In addition to auction items, this year, door awards will be awarded throughout the evening. Please help us support our school and have a fun evening out!

Fish Fry: Our first fish fry of the year is being sponsored by the congregation, directed by Dawn Crum. She along with numerous volunteers are planning the fish fry, Friday, April 25 between 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. We are looking for sponsors to offset the cost, and our goal is as follows:

15 sponsors who donate $100.00 each for a box of fish, will receive

4 free dinner tickets.

15 sponsors who donate $50.00 each to help provide potatoes, baked beans, and miscellaneous items, will receive 2 free dinner tickets.

If you can help with a donation or services, contact Linda in the Church Office at 362-3726 or Cindy in the School Office at 362-6692.

We will also need pies for dessert. Anyone wishing to donate pies should have them at the school gymnasium by 4 p.m. the day of the fish fry. Please call Annette Williams at 326-8017 with any questions. Thank you in advance for your support!

Tickets are available in both offices and from Board members. If you have any questions, please call Imogene Dahl at 324-6668. Tickets are $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for children under 12. Proceeds will be divided between the Church Door Fund and Roof Repair Fund.

ST. JOHN’S COMMUNION STATEMENT: As a member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, we believe Scripture teaches that the Lord's Supper is a precious gift of God in which Christ gives us His true body and blood (in a miraculous way), together with the bread and wine, for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith. Because the Bible teaches that this sacrament may also be spiritually harmful if misused, St. John’s communes only those instructed in the teachings of the LCMS and our church who have confessed their faith in these teachings. Prompted by the love for God’s Word, love for God’s people, and love for the Bible’s deep concern for doctrinal truth (Romans 16:17), guests who desire to commune are asked to speak with the pastor before service.

FELLOWSHIP COFFEE: All are invited to our Fellowship Coffee across the driveway in our School Cafeteria following the 8:00 AM Sunday Service.

BIBLE CLASSES: Adult Bible Study follows the Fellowship Coffee in the

Cafeteria at 9:30 AM.
