This Week at St. John’s 12th Sunday after Pentecost-August 3, 2008From Pastor Brauer: Today, you have come hungry! Welcome to where the Bread of Life is given! Jesus would be ready to feed the crowd of 5,000 men plus women and children, but He desired for His disciples to share in that work. “You give them something to eat,” is the imperative Jesus orders the Twelve to take care of their needs. But with what shall they feed them? Herein lies the lesson of this story, and that lesson is meant for us today, too! How will we feed those who hunger and thirst for the Gospel? We invite them to come and eat and drink without cost! Why? Because Jesus has taken care of that. He blessed the food. Today, you hold in your hand that basket of leftovers that shows God’s abundant blessings! "A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT"Romans 9:1-13: St. Paul was saddened by the unbelief of the Jews who had every advantage as the chosen people of God. It is very difficult to see people we know and love who do not believe in Christ. That encourages us to use our time and money to support the mission of our church to reach the spiritually lost in our families, our communities and throughout the world. LCMS ANNOUNCEMENTS From the Family Circle: Do you have any spare produce from your garden? The Family Circle is sponsoring a free “Farmers Market Stand” to provide fresh produce for families who need it. We will begin giving out free produce from our “cart” on Sundays after the 10:45 AM service. This service is for the community and congregation members, and is “first come-first served” until our supply runs out. We will continue throughout the growing season. Please consider donating your extras to those who could use it. Your produce may be dropped off in the church basement Saturday or Sunday, before services. If you have any questions, please call Julie Sinclair or Wendy Husmann. Our first week was a huge success and we helped many deserving families. Thanks to all who donated produce! Planning Meeting on August 9, 2008: Mark your calendars to attend the annual Planning Meeting on Saturday morning, August 9, beginning with a breakfast brunch pot luck at 9:00 A.M., followed by the keynote Bible study, then a month-by-month walk through for the coming year (August 2008-August 2009). If your board or committee has regular events that need to be placed on the calendar, please be certain to attend this meeting. If you are able to forward these dates in advance to the Church office, this will help in the preparation of the materials handed out that day. Please come with your breakfast dish to share; coffee and orange drink will be provided. Day School Teacher Installation and Rededication: Make plans to attend the 8:00 A.M. worship service on August 17 as we will install our new teachers, Miss Erin Ponder and Miss Megan Nieman, and to rededicate our returning faculty. A welcome reception will be held during the fellowship time between services in the School’s cafeteria. From the Board of Parish Fellowship: St. John’s annual outdoor worship service/family picnic/hog roast is August 24. Plan now to attend. See the flyer elsewhere in this bulletin with pertinent information. Sunday School News: Sunday School will resume on Sunday, September 7th. In preparation of this blessed event, there will be a clean-up day on Saturday, August 23rd at 9:30 am (same day as set-up for the outdoor service). We will be hanging new bulletin boards, cleaning up the classrooms, and sorting/organizing materials for the new year. If you are able to help, please just show up and you'll be put to work. Little helping hands are also welcome (especially if they come with an adult). Sign up for Sunday School will begin on Sunday, August 24th at the Outdoor service. Sign-up is not required to attend, but assists in ordering the proper amount of materials. Finally, please prayerfully consider being a Sunday School teacher. We have a very limited staff and the potential to reach lots of children. Additional teachers allow for smaller class sizes and prevent teacher burn-out. Even if you are only available once a month or twice a year, we need you! Currently, there are no teachers available for 3rd grade and up and no substitutes for the younger grades. Help is also needed to lead the group opening, which can be as simple as an opening prayer or a detailed object lesson. Perhaps someone would be interested in starting a youth bible study to meet Sunday mornings? Materials are available, and no experience is necessary. Please contact Pastor Brauer or Tracy Fronk if you want to help, but just don't know how to get started. Activities Committee Meeting: All Activities Committee members, please remember to attend tomorrow’s (Monday, August 4) meeting at 1:00 PM in the Ladies Lounge. Please bring your Fall Festival Theme Basket items to the meeting. From the Trustees and Treasurer of the Congregation: Many of you have noticed roofing work being done over the past few weeks. The roof needed to be repaired before the doors, as it was reaching emergency status. Not only did we have a hole that was leaking into the church, but water was beginning to enter the light fixtures. We do not want to take money from the Door Fund for this expense, so we are asking for donations to go toward these emergency repairs. The repairs are estimated to be around $8,000. Thank you for your support! Thrift Shop News: Beginning tomorrow, August 8, the Thrift Shop is having a one week bag sale on clothing. A paper grocery full of clothing is just $5.00. This sale will last for the entire week! We are also in need of some paper grocery bags. If you have any tt spare, please drop them off at the Thrift Shop or the Church Office. Discipleship Class: Pastor Brauer wants to line up the Discipleship Class to start this September. Two options are being considered: one that meets during the Sunday morning Bible class time (meaning an adult class instructor will be needed to fill in for the regular Adult Bible class time) or to conduct this class during a weeknight (either Tuesday or Thursday evenings). If you are interested in learning the teachings of the Lutheran faith and to become a member, please contact the church office (362-3726) and let us know. Please indicate which time would work best for you. 7th and 8th Grade Confirmation Classes: Wednesday, September 3, will begin the Midweek Confirmation Instruction time for our 7th and 8th grade students who do not attend St. John’s Lutheran School. If you have completed the first year of instruction, this year will be your final year for in-depth instruction leading to the Rite of Confirmation. For those entering 7th grade, or for those who may not have attended their first year, this is your entry year to begin the study of Luther’s Small Catechism. Please call the church office to register. Once you have registered, an information packet will be mailed out in preparation for the first night’s class. Instruction time begins at 6 P.M., and lasts until 7:15. A calendar with all our meeting dates will be distributed on the first night of class. From the Archive Department: The Archive Department has not received any pictures of the 150 Anniversary celebration. If anyone has pictures they will donate to the archives, it will be appreciated. Please bring them to the church office. Thank you. Karen Piper Peach Fest Fellowship Coffee Hour Sunday, August 10, 9:00 AM Cafeteria

Worship Program for 12th Sunday after Pentecost-Aug 3, 2008St . John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church & School (LCMS) 111 Kingsbury Ave., La Porte, IN 46350 219-362-3726 email-churchoffice@stjohns-lpin.org Rev. Ronald A. Brauer, Pastor—Home phone: 219-362-4703 Worship Services Wednesday 10:00 AM, Saturday 6:00 PM Sunday 8:00 AM, 10:45 AM TO OUR VISITORS: We extend a warm welcome to the assembly of believers gathered to worship with us at St. John’s! First time visitors, please sign the visitors section of the pew pad located at the end of the pew. We want to know who you are! For your convenience, restrooms, first aid, telephone needs and a nursery room for children ages 5 & under are provided in the church basement under the Narthex. God bless your worship! PETITIONS, INTERCESSIONS, AND THANKSGIVING PRAYERS before worship can be found in Lutheran Service Book, inside front cover and beginning on page 305. SPECIAL NEEDS: Persons unable to climb stairs to the altar are invited to sit in the extra-wide front pews to receive communion or to place a walker. ST. JOHN’S COMMUNION STATEMENT: As a member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, we believe Scripture teaches that the Lord's Supper is a precious gift of God in which Christ gives us His true body and blood (in a miraculous way), together with the bread and wine, for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith. Because the Bible teaches that this sacrament may also be spiritually harmful if misused, St. John’s communes only those instructed in the teachings of the LCMS and our church who have confessed their faith in these teachings. Prompted by the love for God’s Word, love for God’s people, and love for the Bible’s deep concern for doctrinal truth (Romans 16:17), guests who desire to commune are asked to speak with the pastor before service. FELLOWSHIP COFFEE: All are invited to our Fellowship Coffee across the driveway in our School Cafeteria following the 8:00 AM Sunday Service. BIBLE CLASSES: Adult Bible Study follows the Fellowship Coffee in the Cafeteria at 9:30 AM.
